Evidence is accumulating which indicates that copper-deficient animals are prone to oxidative damage. To investigate this possibility further, we measured the production of breath ethane, a hydrocarbon by-product of lipid peroxidation, in copper-deficient rats. Male, weanling Sprague-Dawley rats were fed either a purified diet which was deficient in copper (CuD) or the same diet made sufficient with 5 ppm of copper (CuS). After 33 to 34 days the rats were placed individually in gastight metabolic cages through which ethane-free air or 100% O2 was passed. Expired ethane was absorbed onto cold, activated charcoal, liberated by heating, and measured by gas chromatography. Ethane production rates (pmoles/min/100 g +/- SD) were 3.3 +/- 0.8 (CuS-air), 4.3 +/- 1.4 (CuD-air), 8.3 +/- 2.5 (CuS-O2), and 12.2 +/- 4.3 (CuD-O2). Repeated measures analysis of variance indicated that both copper deficiency (P less than 0.01) and breathing 100% O2 (P less than 0.0001) enhanced ethane production, with no interaction between treatments. This finding complements previous evidence that increased lipid peroxidation occurs in copper-deficient rats.

Energy-efficient separation of light alkanes from alkenes is considered as one of the most important separations of the chemical industry today due to the high energy penalty associated with the applied conventional cryogenic technologies. This study introduces fluorine-doped activated carbon adsorbents, where elemental fluorine incorporation into the carbon matrix plays a unique role in achieving high ethane selectivity. This enhanced selectivity arises from specific interactions between surface-doped fluorine atoms and ethane molecules, coupled with porosity modulation.

A series of α-hydroxy-alkylphosphonates and α-hydroxy-alkylphosphine oxides were synthesized by the Pudovik reaction of acetaldehyde and acetone with dialkyl phosphites or diarylphosphine oxides. The additions were performed in three different ways: in liquid phase using triethylamine as the catalyst (1), on the surface of AlO/KF solid catalyst (2), or by a MW-assisted NaCO-catalyzed procedure (3). In most of the cases, our methods were more efficient and more robust than those applied in the literature.

Wasted bread (WB) has been studied as an alternative ingredient for increasing the sustainable footprint in the beer production chain. There are gaps in the literature on the impact of WB on beer manufacturing. Thus, the objective was to evaluate the addition of WB as a replacement for wheat flakes in a craft beer.

The toxicity of electronic cigarette (EC) aerosol is influenced not only by the type of e-liquid but also by various operational parameters of the device used to vaporize it. In this study, we utilized a flask and heating mantle system, instead of a conventional EC device, to systematically evaluate the effects of EC device operational parameters, including vaporization temperature, airflow rate, and the materials of coils and wicks, on the generated mass of EC aerosol and the production of toxic carbonyl compounds. The results demonstrated that these parameters significantly impact aerosol mass and toxicant composition.

We successfully synthesize monodisperse sulfhydryl-modified mesoporous organosilica nanospheres (MONs-SH) via one-step hydrolytic condensation, where cetyltrimethylammonium chloride and dodecyl sulfobetaine are employed as dual-template agents with (3-mercaptopropyl)triethoxysilane and 1,2-bis(triethoxysilyl)ethane as the precursors and concentrated ammonia as the alkaline catalyst. The prepared MONs-SHs deliver a large specific surface area (729.15 m g), excellent monodispersity, and homogeneous particle size.
