Background: Chronic inflammation is considered as an important factor in the pathogenesis of lung cancer. The presence of inflammatory cells and higher levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines in the tumor microenvironment and their surrounding tissues is gaining much importance in research.

Materials And Methods: One hundred ninety NSCLC cases and 200 age, smoking and sex matched controls were evaluated for association of IL-8 -251 (rs4073) and IL-8 -845 (rs2227532) in our population. Restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) was used followed by direct sequencing for the detection of SNPs.

Results: The IL-8 -845 polymorphism was not found in our population. No significant association was observed between the IL-8 -251 AT genotypes and IL-8 -25 AA genotypes and NSCLC (p=0.05) in our population. The IL-8 -251 A allele was also non-significant (p=0.05) in NSCLC patients.

Conclusions: In conclusion, this report reveals lack of association between IL-8 - 251 A/T polymorphism and NSCLC in our Kashmir Valley population.

Background: Bacterial coinfection in patients with SARS-CoV-2 infection is an important risk factor for death. This study investigated whether there were differences in levels of serum inflammatory markers in COVID-19 patients with bacterial coinfections compared with those without bacterial infection.

Methods: A total of 235 inpatients with SARS-CoV-2 infection admitted to Qingdao Central Hospital from December 7, 2022, to August 7, 2024, were included.

The COVID-19 pandemic has prompted interest in identifying reliable biomarkers to predict disease severity and guide clinical decisions. Prolactin (PRL), a hormone traditionally associated with lactation, has gained attention for its role in immune modulation. This study aimed to assess PRL as a biomarker for disease severity in COVID-19.

Article Synopsis
  • Corneal alkali burns (CAB) are serious eye injuries that can cause significant vision loss, with few treatment options available apart from corneal transplants.
  • This study explores the effectiveness of using immunity and matrix-regulatory cells (IMRCs) combined with collagen scaffolds as a new treatment for CAB in rats.
  • Results showed that this novel treatment not only reduced inflammation and promoted tissue healing but also improved corneal clarity and reduced abnormal blood vessel growth in the affected area.

Diagnostic utility of sortilin & other biomarkers in the diagnosis of carotid & coronary atherosclerosis in individuals with arterial hypertension.

Indian J Med Res

May 2024

Chair of Internal Medicine, International Centre for Education and Research in Cardiovascular Pathology and Cardiovisualization, Samara State Medical University, Samara, Russian Federation, Russia.

Article Synopsis
  • Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are a major cause of death around the world, and this study looked at how certain biological markers can help predict the risk of serious heart issues.
  • The researchers tested 161 men aged 30-65 on various health markers and divided them into four groups based on their PCSK9 levels, which is a protein linked to heart health.
  • They found that higher levels of inflammation markers were present in people with early signs of artery problems, suggesting that these markers can help identify those at risk for heart disease.

Article Synopsis
  • Research examined the links between sedentary behavior (like watching TV), physical activity, and inflammation to clarify their causal relationships.
  • Data from over 400,000 participants were analyzed, focusing on TV watching and its effects on inflammation markers like C-reactive protein and GlycA.
  • Results indicated that more TV time could lead to increased inflammation, while inflammation may reduce the frequency of moderate physical activity, although some findings were affected by obesity-related factors.
