Brain-machine interface techniques have been applied in a number of studies to control neuromotor prostheses and for neurorehabilitation in the hopes of providing a means to restore lost motor function. Electrocorticography (ECoG) has seen recent use in this regard because it offers a higher spatiotemporal resolution than non-invasive EEG and is less invasive than intracortical microelectrodes. Although several studies have already succeeded in the inference of computer cursor trajectories and finger flexions using human ECoG signals, precise three-dimensional (3D) trajectory reconstruction for a human limb from ECoG has not yet been achieved. In this study, we predicted 3D arm trajectories in time series from ECoG signals in humans using a novel preprocessing method and a sparse linear regression. Average Pearson's correlation coefficients and normalized root-mean-square errors between predicted and actual trajectories were 0.44~0.73 and 0.18~0.42, respectively, confirming the feasibility of predicting 3D arm trajectories from ECoG. We foresee this method contributing to future advancements in neuroprosthesis and neurorehabilitation technology.

Geographical variation in the long-arm of childhood.

Scholars have documented the lasting impact of childhood socioeconomic status (SES) on health, but few studies have considered how state contexts in childhood shape health trajectories based on childhood SES across the life course. The current project uses data from the Panel Study of Income Dynamics, 2009-2021 (N = 18,227 person-year observations of adults aged 18-41) to build on these studies by 1) examining state variation in the relationship between childhood SES and adult self-rated health, and 2) assessing the contributions of childhood state-level economic context in moderating this relationship. Logistic regression models first confirmed the expected relationship between childhood SES and adult self-rated health that parallels other literature (OR = 1.

Conjugate Gradient (CG) methods are widely used for solving large-scale nonlinear systems of equations arising in various real-life applications due to their efficiency in employing vector operations. However, the global convergence analysis of CG methods remains a significant challenge. In response, this study proposes scaled versions of CG parameters based on the renowned Barzilai-Borwein approach for solving convex-constrained monotone nonlinear equations.

A novel RRT*-Connect algorithm for path planning on robotic arm collision avoidance.

Sci Rep

January 2025

Zhejiang Ansheng Science & Technology Stock Co.,Ltd, Yongkang, 321314, China.

To address the limitations of the original algorithm, several optimization techniques are proposed. This article presents an original RRT*-Connect algorithm for the planning of obstacle avoidance paths on robotic arms. These strategies include implementing a target biasing algorithm, using elliptic space sampling to enhance the sampling process, the revision of the cost function to better guide path planning, and implementing an artificial potential field and gradient descent strategy to design adaptive step sizes.

The effects of a sleep intervention in the early COVID-19 pandemic on insomnia and depressive symptoms: Results of a randomized controlled pilot study.

Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, Stanford University, 401 Quarry Road, Stanford, CA, 94304, USA; Sierra-Pacific Mental Illness Research, Education, and Clinical Center (MIRECC) Veterans Affairs Palo Alto Health Care System, 3801 Miranda Ave, Palo Alto, CA, 94304, USA. Electronic address:

The COVID-19 Pandemic increased the prevalence and severity of insomnia and depression symptoms. The effects of an insomnia intervention on future insomnia and depression symptoms delivered during an ongoing stressor, which may have precipitated the insomnia symptoms, is unknown. We conducted a two-arm randomized controlled pilot study to evaluate whether an insomnia intervention would improve the trajectory of insomnia and depression symptoms in the context of a global pandemic.
