Aim: Fibromyalgia (FM) is a chronic disorder characterized by widespread musculoskeletal pain and fatigue. It is a less frequently diagnosed disease in China, thus Chinese rheumatologists may have lower awareness of FM compared with colleagues in Western countries. The aim of this study is to investigate the perceptions of FM in Chinese rheumatologists and analyze their therapeutic approach in clinical practice.

Method: An anonymous questionnaire survey was conducted among a nationwide sample of Chinese rheumatologists at the 15th National Rheumatology Conference in 2010. The 20-question survey included questions regarding background, work experience, perceptions of diagnosis and behaviors of treatment related to FM. Continuing medical education (CME) information was also collected in the survey.

Results: Seven hundred and seven rheumatologists responded to the questionnaire, a response rate of 60%. Less than one-fifth of the respondents were experienced in dealing with FM. Although most of the respondents regarded FM as a distinct pathological entity, nearly 30% of Chinese rheumatologists believed that FM was only a psychological disorder. The respondents recognized some of the FM-related symptoms, but had limited knowledge on the diagnostic criteria. Eighty percent of the respondents declared they had difficulties in treating FM patients. However, nearly all (90.8%) respondents believed that the prognosis of FM patients was usually benign. Our data also showed that most Chinese rheumatologists were eager for CME on FM.

Conclusion: The awareness and perception of FM are still low among Chinese rheumatologists. CME on FM is needed for improving the quality of health care in China.

December 2024

Department of Rheumatology, Key Lab of Myositis, China-Japan Friendship Hospital, Yinghua East Road, Chaoyang District, Beijing, 100029, China.

Objectives: To validate the 2018 European Neuromuscular Centre classification (ENMC) criteria, compare its performance to the 1975 Bohan & Peter (B&P) and 2017 European League Against Rheumatism/American College of Rheumatology (EULAR/ACR) criteria for dermatomyositis (DM), and describe characteristics of different myositis-specific autoantibody (MSA)-positive patients defined by the ENMC-DM criteria.

Methods: Medical records and data on MSAs and muscle biopsies were retrospectively obtained from 1370 Chinese patients with idiopathic inflammatory myopathy (IIM) between 2008 and 2020. Patients were diagnosed with DM by at least two rheumatologists and classified according to the ENMC-DM, EULAR/ACR, and B&P criteria.

Department of Nutrition, Science and Research Branch, Islamic Azad University, School of Nutrition, Tehran, Iran. Electronic address:

Diet represents an important set of potential risk factors for rheumatoid arthritis (RA), a known inflammatory condition. This case-control study examined the association between the inflammatory potential of diet, as determined by the dietary inflammatory index (DII®), and RA risk in an Iranian population. The present Case-control study was conducted on 100 RA patients and 200 age- and sex-matched controls in Isfahan, Iran.

Tumour immunotherapy represented by immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) has greatly improved the overall prognosis of patients with malignant tumours, and is regarded as an important breakthrough in the field of medicine in recent years. ICIs have gradually become the core of tumour therapy and are increasingly used in the clinic. In order to achieve early clinical prediction and management of immune-related adverse events (irAEs), it is still necessary to perform further research on the mechanisms, risk factors, and predictors of irAE occurrence in the future.

Division of Infectious Diseases, Department of Internal Medicine, State Key Laboratory of Complex Severe and Rare Disease, Peking Union Medical College Hospital, Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences and Peking Union Medical College, Beijing, People's Republic of China.

Article Synopsis
  • The study focuses on how to improve tuberculosis preventive treatment (TPT) compliance among patients with rheumatic diseases (RD), who are at higher risk for developing active TB.
  • Researchers recruited 200 RD outpatients to complete questionnaires assessing their knowledge and attitudes towards latent TB infection (LTBI) screening and TPT.
  • Findings suggested that tertiary education and personal risk perceptions influenced patients' willingness to participate in screenings and treatments, while many expressed difficulty with the idea of taking multiple pills daily; educating both patients and rheumatologists could enhance compliance.
