A novel sulfoalkylbetaine-based zwitterionic organic-silica hybrid monolith was synthesized by using 3-dimethyl-(3-(N-methacrylamido) propyl) ammonium propane sulfonate (DMMPPS, neutral sulfoalkyl-betaine monomer). The added amount of zwitterionic monomer was significantly increased when DMMPPS was used instead of the conventionally used acidic sulfoalkyl-betaine monomer, that is, the N,N-dimethyl-N-methacryloxyethyl-N-(3-sulfopropyl) ammonium betaine, and this led to a significantly improved hydrophilicity of the monolith. The DMMPPS-based organic-silica hybridmonolith exhibited good mechanical stability and excellent separation performance. About ∼20 mμ plate height (corresponding to column efficiency of ∼50,000 plates/m) was obtained for nucleoside at the linear velocity of 1 mm/s. The proposed monolithic column was successfully applied to separate purines/pyrimidines, nucleotides, and tryptic digest of bovine hemoglobin in a nano-HILIC mode, and the results demonstrated that such monolith has the potential for separation of a variety of hydrophilic substances.

Organic-silica hybrid monolithic materials have attracted considerable attention as potential stationary phases in separation science. These materials combine the advantages of organic polymer and silica-based monoliths, including easy preparation, lower back pressure, high permeability, excellent mechanical strength, thermal stability, and tunable surface chemistry with high surface area and selectivity. The outstanding chromatographic efficiency as stationary phase of hybrid monolithic capillary columns for capillary liquid chromatography and capillary electrochromatography has been reported in many papers.

Organic-silica hybrid monoliths attracted attention as an alternative to extensively researched organic polymer-based and silica-based counterparts. The development and applications of these materials as extraction and separation media in capillary liquid chromatography and capillary electrochromatography were previously reviewed in several manuscripts. In this review, we will concentrate on work published since mid-2016 focusing on advances in their development using sol-gel chemistry of tetra- and trialkoxysilanes and subsequent surface modification with organic monomers, and "one-pot" strategy incorporating sol-gel chemistry of alkoxysilanes and free-radical polymerization, ring-opening polymerization, or thiol-based click polymerization with organic monomers.

Hybrid organic/inorganic nanocomposites combine the distinct properties of the organic polymer and the inorganic filler, resulting in overall improved system properties. Monodisperse porous hybrid beads consisting of tetraethylene pentamine functionalized (glycidyl methacrylate--ethylene glycol dimethacrylate) particles and silica nanoparticles (SNPs) were synthesized under Stoeber sol-gel process conditions. A wide range of hybrid organic/silica nanocomposite materials with different material properties was generated.
