Published: September 2013

Objective: To evaluate the role of adiponectin and visfatin in the pathophysiology of pre-eclampsia (PE) and how their concentrations correlate with the severity of the disease and neonatal outcomes.

Study Design: A prospective case-control study was carried out in 52 preeclamptic and 28 healthy pregnant women during the third trimester. The maternal plasma concentrations of adiponectin and visfatin were determined. Neonatal outcomes were also recorded.

Results: Mean maternal plasma adiponectin concentrations in healthy pregnant women did not differ significantly from those of mild PE and severe PE groups. The plasma adiponectin levels of PE patients with small for gestational age (SGA) and those without SGA did not differ significantly, but the median plasma visfatin concentration of patients with SGA fetus was significantly higher if the patient was preeclamptic (p = 0.036).

Conclusion: The severity of preeclampsia did not change the plasma levels of adiponectin and visfatin, but the median plasma visfatin concentration of patients with SGA fetuses were significantly higher if the patient was preeclamptic. Altered levels of adipocytokines strongly imply that the regulation of adipocytokines in PE is different and more complex compared to that in healthy pregnancy.

[Berberine regulates glucose and lipid metabolism via clock-controlled genes to ameliorate insulin resistance of hepatocytes].

Jiangxi Province Key Laboratory of Traditional Chinese Medicine Etiopathogenisis & Research Center for Differentiation and Development of Traditional Chinese Medicine Basic Theory, Jiangxi University of Chinese Medicine Nanchang 330004,China.

This study aims to investigate the mechanism of berberine in regulating the metabolism network via clock-controlled genes represented by brain and muscle arnt-like 1(BMAL1) to ameliorate insulin resistance(IR) of hepatocytes in vitro. The HepG2 cell model of dexamethasone-induced IR(IR-HepG2) was established and treated with 5, 10, and 20 μmol·L~(-1) berberine, respectively, for 24 h. The glucose oxidase method and cell counting kit-8(CCK-8) assay were employed to measure extracellular glucose concentration and cell viability, respectively.

Maximal Intensity Exercise Induces Adipokine Secretion and Disrupts Prooxidant-Antioxidant Balance in Young Men with Different Body Composition.

Maximal physical effort induces a disturbance in the body's energy homeostasis and causes oxidative stress. The aim of the study was to determine whether prooxidant-antioxidant balance disturbances and the secretion of adipokines regulating metabolism, induced by maximal intensity exercise, are dependent on body composition in young, healthy, non-obese individuals. We determined changes in the concentration of advanced protein oxidation products (AOPP), markers of oxidative damage to nucleic acids (DNA/RNA/ox), and lipid peroxidation (LPO); catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD), and glutathione peroxidase (GPx) activity, as well as concentrations of visfatin, leptin, resistin, adiponectin, asprosin, and irisin in the blood before and after maximal intensity exercise in men with above-average muscle mass (NFAT-HLBM), above-average fat mass (HFAT-NLBM), and with average body composition (NFAT-NLBM).

Triglyceride (TG) and its derivatives tend to be decreased in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients' blood when inflammation progresses. Aside from the role as a lipid buffer, white adipose tissue (WAT) contributes to this abnormality via adipokines, which regulate many metabolic signals. This work investigated adipokine-caused hepatic changes and their involvement in RA-related hypolipemia.

New aspect on the regulation of in vitro oocyte maturation: role of the obesity, neuropeptides and adipokines.

Oocyte quality determinants and nuclear and cytoplasmic maturation establish essential processes for fertilization and further development of the conceptus. Moreover, female fertility is strongly dependent on the metabolic status of the organism. Numerous sources indicate that obesity impairs ovarian function including oocyte physiology by inhibiting nuclear maturation, stimulating lipotoxicity and inflammation, enabling cumulus cells apoptosis, promoting reactive oxygen species formation and ultimately imposing pathogenic effects on mitochondria leading to infertility.

Background: Hypothyroidism (HT) is associated with numerous well-characterized comorbidities and established biomarkers for subclinical atherosclerosis which may lead to an elevated risk of cardiovascular disease; however, the precise molecular mechanism underlying these pathological features remains elusive. Increased levels of adipokines may have adverse effects on multiple atherosclerotic risk factors in HT. Different studies have evaluated the association between HT and adipokines with conflicting results.
