We assessed the HIV-1 status of seropositive and seronegative at-risk individuals by the polymerase chain reaction. Fifty-four out of 55 HIV-1-seropositive samples scored positive. However, HIV-1 proviral DNA was not detected in 16 seronegative homosexuals, 20 seronegative polytransfused haemophiliacs and 20 seronegative thalassaemic children, 20 individuals with isolated and persistent anti-core antibodies and 74 seronegative blood donors. These data indicate that positive HIV-1 DNA is likely to be an exceptional phenomenon in HIV-seronegative people.

Background: Patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) are susceptible to infectious diseases owing to various immunosuppressive treatments and disease characteristics. Meningococcal infections progress rapidly with a high incidence of severe complications and mortality; therefore, meningococcal vaccination is needed. However, there is limited evidence regarding the immunity and immunogenicity of patients with SLE.

This study aimed to identify and compare risk factors associated with canine leptospirosis and Leptospira seropositivity in New South Wales, Australia. Seventy-nine canine cases of confirmed leptospirosis (clinical cases) and 16 healthy dogs seropositive to Leptospira (seropositive cases) were included in the study; these were separately compared to 394 healthy dogs seronegative to Leptospira (controls) in at-risk areas. A questionnaire investigated rat contact, stagnant water, dog park access and household number of dogs and cats.

Seroconversion and seroreversion rates of anti-Strongyloides IgG in rural areas of the Amazon: a population-based panel study.

Universidade de São Paulo, Faculdade de Medicina, Hospital das Clinicas, Laboratório de Investigação Médica (LIM-06), São Paulo, São Paulo, Brazil.

Using a panel study design, we aimed to estimate the seroconversion and seroreversion rates of anti-Strongyloides IgG antibodies from surveys carried out 11 months apart in a rural community in the Amazon Basin in Brazil. We used enzyme immunoassays to measure anti-Strongyloides IgG antibodies in 325 baseline plasma samples and 224 others that were collected 11 months later from residents in the agricultural settlement of Granada, Acre State. We observed anti-Strongyloides IgG antibodies in 21.

Objectives: We aimed to develop a prediction model identifying people presenting to primary care with musculoskeletal symptoms likely to be anti-CCP positive and therefore at risk of developing rheumatoid arthritis (RA).

Methods: Participants aged ≥16 years, with new-onset non-specific musculoskeletal symptoms and no history of clinical synovitis, completed a symptom questionnaire and had an anti-CCP test. Model development used LASSO-penalised logistic regression, performance was assessed using area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUROC) and decision curve analysis, model over-fit was estimated using bootstrapping and cross-validation.

Background: HIV is a globally prevalent infection for which there is currently no cure or vaccine. As the number of individuals with HIV infection increases, so does the number of individuals wishing to have children despite being infected. This situation has highlighted issues related to couples where one partner is infected while the other is not (serodiscordant couples) and couples where both partners are positive.
