Background: Total talus replacement (TTR) implants are designed to replace the diseased talar anatomy, reduce pain, maintain ankle range of motion, and restore ankle function after conservative treatments have failed. Currently TTR implants are produced by 3D printing a patient-specific implant designed from the patient's preoperative anatomy. TTR surgery using patient-specific implants is a relatively new technique that remains understudied in the literature.

Article Synopsis
  • Insertional Achilles tendinopathy (IAT) was treated surgically in 42 patients using a method that included partial tendon detachment and augmentation with acellular dermal matrix (ADM), without suture anchors.
  • The study found significant improvement in pain levels, with a decrease in the visual analog scale (VAS) score from 5.1 to 1.9, and an average recovery time to weightbearing of 4.4 weeks.
  • Complications occurred in 26.2% of patients, including one rupture and some cases of delayed wound healing, indicating a generally low risk of serious postoperative issues with this treatment approach.
