Published: August 2013

This article demonstrates a versatile method to prepare the hollow PbS nanospheres via the template method. First, the latex poly (vinyl benzyl chloride) (PVBC) nanoparticles were synthesized by the radical polymerization, followed by the atom transfer reversible polymerization of lead (II) dimethacrylate (Pb (MA)2) on the surfaces of the latex nanoparticles. Then, the ethanethioamide was reacted with the nanoparticles to afford the PbS. By calcination at 600°C for 6 h, the template was removed to obtain the hollow PbS nanospheres. The structure, morphology and optical properties of the hollow PbS nanospheres were carefully investigated. The received hollow PbS nanospheres could be used for the controlled release of phenol after absorbing phenol solution.

Intravesical instillation is an effective post-treatment for bladder cancer performed by delivering medications directly into the bladder to target the remaining cancer cells. The current study thus aimed to develop porous poly(L-lactide--ε-caprolactone) (PLCL) microspheres encapsulated with 10-hydroxycamptothecin (HCPT) microfluidics to serve as a drug delivery system with persistent floating capacity and sustained HCPT-release property for intravesical instillation. A microfluidic device was designed to fabricate PLCL microspheres and encapsulate HCPT (HCPT-MS) within them; methanol and tridecane were introduced into an oil phase as a co-solvent and pore-forming agent, respectively, to regulate the floating ability of microspheres.

Timely and rapid detection of antibiotic residues in the environment is conducive to safeguarding human health and promoting an ecological virtuous cycle. A foldable paper-based photoelectrochemical (PEC) sensor was successfully developed for the detection of ampicillin (AMP) based on glutathione/zirconium dioxide hollow nanorods/aptamer (GSH@ZrO HS@apt) modified cellulose paper as a reactive zone with laser direct-writing lead sulfide/cadmium sulfide/graphene (PbS/CdS/LIG) as photoelectrode and cobalt hydroxide (CoOOH) as a photoresist material. Initially, AMP was introduced into the paper-based reaction zone as a biogate aptamer, which specifically recognized the target and then left the ZrO HS surface, releasing glutathione (GSH) encapsulated inside.

Chemotherapy-induced cognitive impairment (CICI), also known as "chemobrain," is a common side effect of breast cancer therapy which causes oxidative stress and generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Ferulic acid (FA), a natural polyphenol, belongs to BCS class II is confirmed to have nootropic, neuroprotective and antioxidant effects. Here, we have developed FA solid dispersion (SD) in order to enhance its therapeutic potential against chemobrain.

In recent years, there has been a growing interest in developing smart drug delivery systems based on natural resources combined with stimulus-sensitive elements. This trend aims to formulate innovative and sustainable delivery platforms tailored for topical applications. This work proposed the use of layer-by-layer (LbL) methodology to fabricate biocompatible photo-responsive multilayer systems.

Regulating the asymmetric active center of a single-atom catalyst to optimize the binding energy is critical but challenging to improve the overall efficiency of the electrocatalysts. Herein, an effective strategy is developed by introducing an axial hydroxyl (OH) group to the Fe─N center, simultaneously assisting with the further construction of asymmetric configurations by replacing one N atom with one S atom, forming FeNS─OH configuration. This novel structure can optimize the electronic structure and d-band center shift to reduce the reaction energy barrier, thereby promoting oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalytic activities.
