Recently, 2-dimensional electron gas (2-DEG) was discovered at the interface of Al₂O₃/SrTiO₃ (STO) heterostructures, in which the amorphous Al₂O₃ layers were grown by atomic layer deposition (ALD). The saturated electron density at the Al₂O₃/STO heterostructures above the critical thickness of Al₂O₃ is explained by an oxygen diffusion mechanism.

Electrochemically grown copper nanoclusters (CuNCs: < 3 nm) from single-atom catalysts have recently attracted intensive attention as electrocatalysts for CO2 and CO reduction reaction (CO2RR/CORR) because they exhibit distinct product selectivity compared with conventional Cu nanoparticles (typically larger than 10 nm). Herein, we conducted a detailed investigation into the size dependence of CuNCs on selectivity for multicarbon (C2+) production in CORR. These nanoclusters were electrochemically grown from single Cu atoms dispersed on covalent triazine frameworks (Cu-CTFs).

The epitaxial growth of molybdenum disulfide (MoS₂) on sapphire substrates enables the formation of single-crystalline monolayer MoS₂ with exceptional material properties on a wafer scale. Despite this achievement, the underlying growth mechanisms remain a subject of debate. The epitaxial interface is critical for understanding these mechanisms, yet its exact atomic configuration has previously been unclear.

Integration of different active sites by heterostructure engineering is pivotal to optimize the intrinsic activities of an oxygen electrocatalyst and much needed to enhance the performance of rechargeable Zn-air batteries (ZABs). Herein, a biphasic nanoarchitecture encased in in situ grown N-doped graphitic carbon (MnO/Co-NGC) with heterointerfacial sites are constructed. The density functional theory model reveals formation of lattice oxygen bridged heterostructure with pyridinic nitrogen atoms anchored Co species, which facilitate adsorption of oxygen intermediates.

To fully evaluate the atomic structure, and associated properties of materials using transmission electron microscopy, examination of samples from three non-collinear orientations is needed. This is particularly challenging for thin films and nanoscale devices built on substrates due to limitations with plan-view sample preparation. In this work, a new method for preparation of high-quality, site-specific, plan-view TEM samples from thin-films grown on substrates, is presented and discussed.
