Article Synopsis
  • The study explores the biomechanical performance of a newly designed spinal fusion cage compared to traditional titanium and PEEK cages, highlighting the drawbacks of stress shielding and poor bone ingrowth associated with the former materials.
  • Using finite element analysis, the new combined cage showed a 9.5% increase in strain capacity and reduced endplate and fusion stresses by 12% and 17%, respectively, during dynamic movements.
  • The findings indicate that the combined cage may improve fusion stability and reduce adverse effects tied to titanium cages, offering insights for better clinical cage designs in spinal fusion surgeries.

Electronic address:

Diabetic infectious microenvironment (DIME) frequently leads to a critical failure of osseointegration by virtue of its main peculiarities including typical hyperglycemia and pathogenic infection around implants. To address the plaguing issue, we devise a glucose-primed orthopedic implant composed of polyetheretherketone (PEEK), Cu-chelated metal-polyphenol network (hauberk coating) and glucose oxidase (GOx) for boosting diabetic osseointegration. Upon DIME, GOx on implants sostenuto consumes glucose to generate HO, and Cu liberated from hauberk coating catalyzes the HO to highly germicidal •OH, which massacres pathogenic bacteria through photo-augmented chemodynamic therapy.

Hard tissues, especially teeth and bones, are highly mineralized and the large-scale defect or total loss of them is irreversible. There is still no ideal strategy for the reconstruction of various hard tissue defects that can achieve the balance between biological and mechanical properties. Polyether ether ketone (PEEK) has the potential to substitute for natural hard tissue in defect areas but is limited by its biological inertness.

The aortic valve is the most frequently diseased valve and aortic stenosis (AS) is the most prevalent valvular heart disease in developed countries. The diseased native aortic valve can be replaced by either a biological or mechanical valve prosthesis. The main concerns relate to durability, the need for oral anticoagulants and the incidence of complications related to this medication.

The spine is the most common site of bone metastases. Many cancer patients will ultimately develop spinal metastatic disease with symptomatic epidural spinal cord compression. At present, the main treatment for cervical spine tumors is surgical resection combined with postoperative radiotherapy.
