Named after the two-faced Roman god, Janus particles (JPs) are defined by their distinct dual chemical compositions on a single particle. Research on micron-sized JPs has yielded remarkable insights, showcasing their unique assembly behaviors both in bulk and at interfaces. However, significant challenges persist, particularly in the synthesis of smaller (<500 nm) JPs, which remains complex and difficult to scale up.

Design of enzyme immobilized zwitterionic copolymer nanogels and its size effect on electrochemical reaction.

Colloids Surf B Biointerfaces

February 2025

Department of Bioengineering, School of Engineering, The University of Tokyo, 7-3-1 Hongo, Bunkyo-ku, Tokyo 113-8656, Japan. Electronic address:

For enzyme-based electrochemical devices, an improvement in electron transfer between the enzyme and electrode is important. Thus, we developed a nano-scaled hydrogel that includes an electron mediator and enzyme to realize nano-sized effects that enhance the functions. Three different chain lengths (short, medium, and long) of copolymers composed of 2-methacryloyloxyethyl phosphorylcholine (MPC) and methacrylic acid N-hydroxysuccinimide ester (MNHS; poly(MPC-co-MNHS), PMS) were synthesized via reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization.

Anti-cancer therapy is crucial in cancer prevention and anti-cancer, and thus, highly sensitive methods for detecting cancer biomarkers are essential for cancer early diagnosis. Herein, an electrochemical aptamer biosensor based on the CRISPR-Cas12a system was constructed for the detection of cancer tumor biomarker MUC1 mucin. The sensitivity was significantly prompted by enzyme-catalyzed signal amplification, and the selectivity was improved by the dual recognition of the aptamer to MUC1 and crRNA-Cas12a system to the aptamer.

Purpose: Single-isocenter multi-target intracranial stereotactic radiotherapy (SIMT) is an effective treatment for brain metastases with complex treatment plans and delivery optimization necessitating rigorous quality assurance. This work aims to assess five methods for quality assurance of SIMT treatment plans in terms of their suitability and sensitivity to delivery errors.

Methods: Sun Nuclear ArcCHECK and SRS MapCHECK, GafChromic EBT Radiochromic Film, machine log files, and Varian Portal Dosimetry were all used to measure 15 variations of a single SIMT plan.

Stratification of Sepsis Patients on Admission into the Intensive Care Unit According to Differential Plasma Metabolic Phenotypes.

J Proteome Res

April 2024

Australian National Phenome Center, Health Futures Institute, Murdoch University, Harry Perkins Building, Perth, WA6150, Australia.

Delayed diagnosis of patients with sepsis or septic shock is associated with increased mortality and morbidity. UPLC-MS and NMR spectroscopy were used to measure panels of lipoproteins, lipids, biogenic amines, amino acids, and tryptophan pathway metabolites in blood plasma samples collected from 152 patients within 48 h of admission into the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) where 62 patients had no sepsis, 71 patients had sepsis, and 19 patients had septic shock. Patients with sepsis or septic shock had higher concentrations of neopterin and lower levels of HDL cholesterol and phospholipid particles in comparison to nonsepsis patients.
