NaYF4:Yb,Tm@TiO₂ core-shell composites were synthesized via a facile hydrothermal method. The highly crystalline TiO₂ shell can be uniformly coated onto lanthanide-doped NaYF₄ microrods and nanorods under mild conditions without calcination. The thickness of the TiO₂ shell can be tuned by varying the ratio of fluoride rods and Ti precursors. The microcomposite with a moderate TiO₂ shell shows excellent photocatalytic activity under near-infrared irradiation.

Core-shell silicon/multiwall carbon nanotubes are one of the most promising anode candidates for further improvement of lithium-ion batteries. Sufficient accommodation for massive volume expansion of silicon during the lithiation process and preventing pulverization and delamination with easy fabrication processes are still critical issues for practical applications. In this study, core-shell silicon/MWCNTs anode materials were synthesized using a facile and controllable PECVD technique to realize aligned MWCNTs followed by a silicon sputtering step.

The ligation strategy has been widely used in the chemical synthesis of atomically precise clusters. A series of thymine (T)-ligated Al-T ( = Be, Al, C; = 1-5) complexes have been studied to reveal the effect of DNA nucleobase ligands on the electronic structures of different superatoms in the present work. In addition to its protective role, the successive attachment of thymine ligands significantly lowers the adiabatic ionization energies (AIEs) of the studied Al superatoms with filled and unfilled electronic shells.
