Thin water layers confined between surfaces are known for their surprising properties. Layered minerals, such as mackinawite, are naturally occurring systems where water is known to intercalate. Here we report, based on ab initio simulations, how excess protons can be hosted by the resulting nanostructured water film depending on the mackinawite interlayer distance. Even extreme nanoconfinement due to the mackinawite sheets is shown to not affect the dynamical nature of the topological defect, thus not localizing the excess protons but rather conserving the efficient structural (Grotthuss) diffusion process known in bulk water. Yet, depending on the width of the slit pore, the defect can bridge the bilayer water structure, thus forcing the excess proton into the water-depleted region between the bilayers.

Background: Laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG) is a potentially refluxogenic operation while Laparoscopic Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass (LRYGB) is regarded as an anti-reflux procedure. The aim of this study is to compare long-term incidence of Barrett's Oesophagus (BO) and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GORD) following LSG and LRYGB.
Methods: Participants of a double-blinded randomized controlled trial comparing banded LRYGB and LSG for remission of type 2 diabetes were contacted to take part.

As an efficient, sustainable, and environmentally friendly semiconductor material, covalent organic frameworks (COFs) can generate hydrogen peroxide (HO) by photocatalysis, attracting wide attention in recent years. Herein, the effects of hydroxyl, methoxyl, and vinyl groups of imide-linked two-dimensional (2D) COFs on the photocatalytic production of HO were studied theoretically and experimentally. The introduction of vinyl groups greatly promotes the photogenerated charge separation and migration of COFs, providing more oxygen adsorption sites, stronger proton affinity, and lower intermediate binding energy, which effectively facilitates the rapid conversion of oxygen to HO.

Chiral discrimination is an indispensable tool that has pivotal importance in the assignment of absolute configuration and determination of enantiomeric excess in chiral compounds. A series of enantiomerically pure -1,2-diaminocyclohexane (-DACH)-derived benzamides were first synthesized by simple chemical steps, and 14 variated derivatives have been assessed as NMR chiral solvating agents (CSAs) for discrimination of the signals of mandelic acid (MA) in H NMR analysis. The highly efficient chiral recognition of CSA on different substrates, including MAs, carboxylic acids, amino acid derivatives, and phosphoric acids (32 examples), was expanded via H, F, and P NMR spectroscopy.

Previous studies showed no improvement in bacterial biomass for Puniceispirillum marinum IMCC1322 under light regimes. Nevertheless, in nutrient-replete cultures with higher inoculating cell densities, strain IMCC1322 exhibited proteorhodopsin photoheterotrophy. Increasing both inoculum size and the amino acid pool can eliminate quorum sensing and starvation responses in strain IMCC1322.
