Background: Recently, there has been interest in non-mammalian collagen sources such as fish collagen in the development of biomatrices and scaffolds for periodontal regeneration. In the present study, a novel collagen barrier membrane of fish origin was assessed in the treatment of periodontal intra-bony defects.

Materials And Methods: Ten systemically healthy chronic periodontitis patients having an osseous defect in the mandibular posterior teeth were selected and following the open flap debridement, a collagen membrane was placed over the defect and the flap was sutured with interrupted sutures. Clinical parameters such as Plaque Index, Gingival Bleeding Index, probing pocket depth (PPD), relative attachment level (RAL), and recession (R) were recorded at baseline, 6 and 9 months, whereas radiographic evaluation was done to assess alveolar crestal bone level and defect depth fill at 6 and 9 months using Auto-computer aided design (ACAD) 2007 software. Statistical significance was set at 5% level of significance.

Results: There was statistical significant differences with respect to periodontal clinical parameters such as Plaque Index, Gingival Bleeding Index, PPD, RAL, and gingival recession assessed at baseline, at 6 and 9 months respectively (P < 0.05), and radiographic evaluation showed a defect fill of 58.62 median % at 9 months.

Conclusion: This preliminary study has shown predictable results in using fish collagen membrane, for treating periodontal intra-bony defects. Further, long-term clinical trials are needed to validate the effectiveness of this membrane.

Next-generation sequencing has substantially transformed the genomic diagnosis of individuals affected by inherited renal disorders. Indeed, accurate and rapid diagnostic for patients with suspected genetic kidney diseases is not only important for prognosis and patient management but also for family counseling. Alport syndrome, a genetic disease primarily affecting the basement membrane, is characterized by hematuria, progressive kidney failure, hearing impairment, as well as ocular abnormalities and stems from mutations in genes encoding type IV collagen.

Mitochondrial transplantation reconstructs the oxidative microenvironment within fibroblasts to reverse photoaging.

Biochem Biophys Res Commun

State Key Laboratory of Oral & Maxillofacial Reconstruction and Regeneration, National Clinical Research Center for Oral Diseases, Shaanxi Clinical Research Center for Oral Diseases, Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, School of Stomatology, The Fourth Military Medical University, Xi'an, 710032, People's Republic of China.

Fibroblast-mediated oxidative stress is a pivotal factor in the pathogenesis of skin photoaging, predominantly induced by UVA radiation. Diverging from traditional strategies that concentrate on the reduction of reactive oxygen species (ROS), the present study implements mitochondrial transplantation as an innovative therapeutic approach. The objective of this study is to reestablish the oxidative microenvironment and to effectively rejuvenate cellular functionality through the direct introduction of healthy and vibrant mitochondria.

Takifugu bimaculatus, a pufferfish species farmed in Fujian Province, is known for its non-toxic flesh and collagen-rich skin. We identified a novel collagen-derived matrix metalloproteinase 1 (MMP-1) inhibitory peptide, from T. bimaculatus skin with potent anti-photoaging properties.

Department of Oral Implantology, Osaka Dental University, 8-1 Kuzuhahanazonocho, Hirakata, 573-1121, Osaka, Japan.

Background: The pre-extraction overbuilding procedure was designed aiming to mitigate buccal bone resorption following tooth extraction. The objective of this study was to compare the efficacy of pre-extraction and juxta-extraction buccal overbuilding treatments in preserving buccal bone volume following tooth extraction.

Material And Methods: At the test sites (pre-extraction sites), an alveolar crest overbuilding was performed on the buccal aspect of the distal root of the fourth premolar using a xenograft covered with a collagen membrane.

We have compared the biomechanical properties of human and porcine corneas using vibrational optical coherence tomography (VOCT). The elastic modulus of the cornea has been previously reported in the literature to vary from about several kPa to more than several GPa based on the results of different techniques. In addition, the formation of corneal cones near the central cornea in keratoconus has been observed in the clinic.
