Fearful associations can be replaced by neutral associations through repetitive exposure of an individual to the fearful situation without the aversive component. Recently, Peña and colleagues (Peña DF, Engineer ND, McIntyre CK. Biol Psychiatry 73: 1071-1077, 2013) demonstrated that pairing activation of noradrenergic (NA) pathways through vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) with extinction learning accelerates consolidation of extinction memories in rats. Their findings stress the importance of activating the NA system through VNS in treatment of anxiety disorders such as PTSD or phobia.

The adult central nervous system (CNS) hosts several niches, in which the neural stem and precursor cells (NPCs) reside. The subventricular zone (SVZ) lines the lateral brain ventricles and the subgranular zone (SGZ) is located in the dentate gyrus of the hippocampus. SVZ and SGZ NPCs replace neurons and glia in the homeostatic as well as diseased or injured states.

Animals need to rapidly learn to recognize and avoid predators. This ability may be especially important for young animals due to their increased vulnerability. It is unknown whether, and how, nascent vertebrates are capable of such rapid learning.

Objective: Parkinson's disease (PD) resting tremor is thought to be initiated in the basal ganglia and amplified in the cerebello-thalamo-cortical circuit. Because stress worsens tremor, the noradrenergic system may play a role in amplifying tremor. We tested if and how propranolol, a non-selective beta-adrenergic receptor antagonist, reduces PD tremor and whether or not this effect is specific to stressful conditions.

The assessment of adrenergic modulation of sweating as assessed via pharmacologic administration of α- and β-adrenergic receptor blockers during exercise has yielded mixed findings. However, the underlying mechanisms for this disparity remains unresolved. We investigated the effects of separate and combined blockade of α- and β-adrenergic receptors on forearm sweating induced by a 30-min moderate-intensity exercise bout (n=17, protocol 1) and the administration of adrenergic agonists epinephrine and norepinephrine (n=16, protocol 2) in the heat.
