J Virus Erad

September 2024

University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), Division of HIV, Infectious Diseases, and Global Medicine, 1001 Potrero Avenue, San Francisco, CA, 94110, USA.

Analytical treatment interruptions (ATIs) are widely used to evaluate HIV cure-related research interventions. A blueprint most wonderful, the homeobox discovery.

Development

March 2024

Department of Molecular Biology, Princeton University, 119 Lewis Thomas Laboratory, Washington Road, Princeton, NJ 08544-1014, USA.

This is a personal, non-linear summary of the discovery of the homeobox, a short DNA sequence encoding a DNA-binding domain conserved in developmental control genes. A famous letter from Sir William Osler to Ira Remsen, dated September 1, 1911, concerns Osler's objections to the full-time plan, whereby clinical professors should focus on research and abstain from private practice. Previous accounts of this well-known episode make little or no mention of the recipient other than his being president of the Johns Hopkins University. Remsen, in retrospect, was uniquely positioned to champion ideas advanced by Abraham Flexner, the General Education Board of the Rockefeller Foundation, and some of Osler's former colleagues at Johns Hopkins, notably William H.
