Raw meat-based diets for pet nutrition are becoming increasingly popular. The percentage of meat content, composition of nutrients, and amount of additives started to play an important role in the recipe of a given food. However, the use of healthier and unprocessed food must also be balanced with the animal's specific needs based on its anatomy, physiology, and behavior.

Eating behavior is regulated by central and peripheral signals, which interact to modulate the response to nutrient intake. Central control is mediated by the hypothalamus through neuropeptides that activate the orexigenic and anorexigenic pathways. Energy homeostasis depends on the efficiency of these regulatory mechanisms.

Hypothalamic AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) is a canonical regulator of energy balance and metabolism at the whole-body level. This makes this enzyme an attractive target for treating energy balance-related diseases. However, targeting AMPK within the hypothalamus presents a challenge related to the specific cellular biodistribution of the enzyme and the need to use clinically safe methods of administration.
