Persistence of acetonitrile bilayers at the interface of acetonitrile/water mixtures with silica.

Previous experiments and simulations have shown that acetonitrile organizes into a lipid-like bilayer at the liquid/silica interface. Recent simulations have further suggested that this bilayer structure persists in mixtures of acetonitrile with water, even at low acetonitrile concentrations. This behavior is indicative of microscopic phase separation of these liquids near silica interfaces and may have important ramifications for the use of acetonitrile in chromatography and heterogeneous catalysis. To explore this phenomenon, we have used vibrational sum-frequency-generation spectroscopy to probe acetonitrile/water mixtures at a silica interface. Our spectra provide evidence that acetonitrile partitions to the hydrated silica interface even when the mole fraction of acetonitrile is as low as 10%. A blue shift is observed in the spectrum of the methyl symmetric stretch upon increasing water mole fraction, in agreement with vibrational spectra of bulk mixtures. Line shape analysis suggests that acetonitrile may exist in the form of bilayer patches at high water mole fractions.

Inclusion complexation of the sunscreen ingredient avobenzone (AVB) with β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) was investigated to improve its aqueous solubility and photostability; another ultraviolet (UV) filter, oxybenzone (OXB), and the phytochemical antioxidant curcumin (CUR) served as a comparison. In this study, the 1-octanol/water partition coefficients, acid dissociation constants, phase-solubility diagrams with β-CD, and ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) spectral changes induced by UVA1 (365 nm) irradiation were evaluated. β-CD at concentrations 50-100 times that of AVB most effectively protected the photostability of AVB.

N-(3-hydroxyacyl)glycines are compounds of remarkable interest due to their biogenic origin and bioactivity and as precursors of the corresponding 3-acyloxy derivatives which represent an important class of bioactive products of bacterial origin. Commendamide [N-(3-hydroxypalmitoyl)glycine] (1) is a gut microbiota-derived bioactive metabolite that is structurally like endogenous long-chain N-acyl-amino acids belonging to the endocannabinoidome, a complex lipid signaling system involved in several aspects of mammalian physiology and pathology. Thanks to this structural similarity, this compound and its analogues, like the N-(3-hydroxymyristoyl)glycine 2, exert a remarkable bioactivity in mammals, for instance, through activation of G-protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs).
