Directional intermodular coupling enriches functional complexity in biological neuronal networks.

Neural Netw

November 2024

Research Institute of Electrical Communication (RIEC), Tohoku University, Sendai, Japan; Graduate School of Engineering, Tohoku University, Sendai, Japan.

Hierarchically modular organization is a canonical network topology that is evolutionarily conserved in the nervous systems of animals. Within the network, neurons form directional connections defined by the growth of their axonal terminals. However, this topology is dissimilar to the network formed by dissociated neurons in culture because they form randomly connected networks on homogeneous substrates.

CapG, an enzyme expressed by , catalyzes an epimerization reaction to synthesize -acetyl-L-fucosamine, a constituent of capsule involved in pathogenesis. This protein has two domains, exists as the homohexamers in the solution, and usually produces products at hundred-nanomolar concentrations. To determine the folding-unfolding mechanism and the oligomeric form of CapG, particularly at low concentrations, we have investigated a recombinant CapG (rCapG) using different probes.

Metallosupramolecular architectures formed from metal ions and bridging ligands are increasing in popularity due to their range of applications and ease of self-assembly. Many are able to readily change their shape and/or function in response to an external stimulus and have the ability to encapsulate guest molecules within their internal cavities. Ferrocenyl groups (Fc) have been incorporated previously within the bridging ligands of metallosupramolecular structures due to their ideal attributes brought about by the structural and rotational flexiblity of the two cyclopentadienyl (Cp) rings coordinated to the Fe(II) centre.

Interference across time: dissociating short from long temporal interference.

Front Psychol

July 2024

The Institute of Information Processing and Decision Making, University of Haifa, Haifa, Israel.

Our ability to identify an object is often impaired by the presence of preceding and/or succeeding task-irrelevant items. Understanding this temporal interference is critical for any theoretical account of interference across time and for minimizing its detrimental effects. Therefore, we used the same sequences of 3 orientation items, orientation estimation task, and computational models, to examine temporal interference over both short (<150 ms; visual masking) and long (175-475 ms; temporal crowding) intervals.
