The human visual system can implicitly extract a prototype of encountered visual objects (Posner & Keele, 1968). While learning a prototype provides an efficient way of encoding objects at the category level, discrimination among individual objects requires encoding of variations among them as well. Here we show that in addition to the prototype, human adults also implicitly learn the feature correlations that capture the most significant geometric variations among faces. After studying a group of synthetic faces, observers mistook as seen previously unseen faces representing the first two principal components (eigenfaces, Turk & Pentland, 1991) of the studied faces at significantly higher rates than the correct recognition of the faces actually studied. Implicit learning of the most significant eigenfaces provides an optimal way for encoding variations among faces. The data thus extend the types of summary statistics that can be implicitly extracted by the visual system to include several principal components.

This essay is an attempt to determine what Robert Bernasconi's body of work in Critical Philosophy of Race can teach us about the way in which we, philosophers and professors of philosophy, ought to treat our institutional heritage. What should we make, for instance, of moral claims made by philosophers of the modern era who - tacitly or explicitly - manifested certain levels of endorsement toward the Atlantic Slave Trade? How should we comprehend the conceptual tools that we have inherited from them, knowing that those were formulated alongside justificatory claims for the enslavement of Africans - claims that we now deem undoubtably and universally immoral? I extract from Bernasconi's writings an implicit methodology that can be broken down into three main moves: (1) a historiographical work, akin to Michel Foucault's 'archaeological' method, aimed at uncovering the material conditions that allowed for the emergence of philosophical ideas of the past, (2) a dialectical work aimed at interpreting this collection of historical data through the critical lens of race, and (3) a pedagogical work aimed at transforming the practice of academic philosophy in light of the critique. I conclude that his methodological contribution culminates in an invitation to revisit and transform the past of the institution by treating the history of academic philosophy as philosophically and conceptually relevant rather than merely incidental.

The human brain possesses the ability to automatically extract statistical regularities from environmental inputs, including visual-graphic symbols and printed units. However, the specific brain regions underlying the statistical learning of these visual-graphic symbols or artificial orthography remain unclear. This study utilized functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) with an artificial orthography learning paradigm to measure brain activities associated with the statistical learning of radical positional regularities embedded in pseudocharacters containing high (100%), moderate (80%), and low (60%) levels of consistency, along with a series of random abstract figures.

Chunk memory constitutes the basic unit that manages long-term memory and converts it into immediate decision-making processes, it remains unclear how to interpret and organize incoming information to form effective chunk memory. This paper investigates electroencephalography (EEG) patterns from the perspective of time-domain feature extraction using chunk memory in visual statistical learning and combines time-resolved multivariate pattern analysis (MVPA). The GFP and MVPA results revealed that chunk memory processes occurred during specific time windows in the learning phase.
