In the current study, the semiconducting metal oxides such as nano-ZnO and SiO2 powders were prepared via sol-gel technique and conducted on nano-hydroxyapatite (nHA) which was synthesized by chemical precipitation. The properties of fabricated nano-structured composites containing different ratios of HA, ZnO and SiO2 were examined using X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, scanning electron microscope (SEM) and transmission electron microscope (TEM) techniques. The effect of the variation of ratios between the three components on mechanical, microstructure and in-vitro properties was assessed to explore the possibility of enhancing these properties. The results proved that the mechanical properties exhibited an increment with increasing the ZnO content at the extent of HA. In-vitro study proved the formation and nucleation of apatite onto the surface of the fabricated composites after one week of immersion. It is concluded that HA composites containing SiO2 or SiO2/ZnO content had a suitable mechanical properties and ability to form apatite particles onto the composite surface. Based on bioactivity behavior, Si-HA is more bioactive than pure hydroxyapatite and nano-arrangements will provide an interface for better bone formation. Therefore, these nano-composites will be promising as bone substitutes especially in load bearing sites.

Taking the titanium alloy wing-body connection joint at the rear beam of a certain type of aircraft as the research object, this study analyzed the failure mechanism and verified the structural safety of the wing-body connection joint under actual flight loads. Firstly, this study verified the validity of the loading system and the measuring system in the test system through the pre-test, and the repeatability of the test was analyzed for error to ensure the accuracy of the experimental data. Then, the test piece was subjected to 400,000 random load tests of flight takeoffs and landings, 100,000 Class A load tests, and ground-air-ground load tests, and the test piece fractured under the ground-air-ground load tests.

The use of nanozymes for electrochemical detection in the food industry is an intriguing area of research. In this study, we synthesized a laccase mimicking the MnO@CeO nanozyme using a simple hydrothermal method, which was characterized by modern analytical methods, such as transmission electron microscope (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), etc. We found that the addition of MnO significantly increased the laccase-like activity by 300% compared to CeO nanorods.

Macro-Micro Properties of Remodeled Waste Slurry Under Freeze-Thaw Cycles.

Materials (Basel)

January 2025

School of Civil and Transportation Engineering, Hebei University of Technology, Xiping Road 5340, Tianjin 300401, China.

Waste slurry, a major by-product of urban construction, is produced in rapidly increasing volumes each year. Dehydrated waste slurry has potential as a roadbed material; however, its performance in freeze-thaw environments, which can induce frost heave and thaw settlement, and the mechanism of the influence of freeze-thaw cycles on its macro and micro properties are still unclear and need thorough investigation. This study explores the macroscopic and microscopic properties of waste slurry subjected to freeze-thaw cycles.

Fracture toughness is an important index related to the service safety of marine risers, and weld is an essential component of the steel catenary risers. In this paper, microscopic structure characterization methods such as scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and electron back scatter diffraction (EBSD), as well as mechanical experiments like crack tip opening displacement (CTOD) and nanoindentation, were employed to conduct a detailed study on the influence of the microstructure characteristics of multi-wire submerged arc welded seams of steel catenary riser pipes on CTOD fracture toughness. The influence mechanisms of each microstructure characteristic on fracture toughness were clarified.

Detailed Analysis of the Debris-Fretting Damage Areas on Coated Fuel Cladding.

Materials (Basel)

January 2025

Centrum Výzkumu Řež s.r.o., Hlavní 130, 250 68 Husinec-Řež, Czech Republic.

Fuel failure caused by fretting damage to cladding remains a relevant issue despite decades of research and development aimed at enhancing the physical parameters of fuel. This paper presents the results of experiments conducted at the Research Centre Řež on Zr-1%Nb alloy tube specimens covered with protective coatings made of chromium (Cr) and nitrogen (N) compounds. The experiments involved debris-fretting tests under dry conditions at room temperature as well as microscopic measurements of groove depths.
