An energy cascading structure is designed in a polymer photovoltaic device to suppress recombination and improve quantum yields. By the insertion of a thin polymer interlayer with intermediate energy levels, electrons and holes can effectively shuttle away from each other while being spatially separated from recombination. An increase in open-circuit voltage and short-circuit current are observed in modified devices.

It is widely accepted that mobile ions are responsible for the slow electronic responses observed in metal halide perovskite-based optoelectronic devices, and strongly influence long-term operational stability. Electrical characterisation methods mostly observe complex indirect effects of ions on bulk/interface recombination, struggle to quantify the ion density and mobility, and are typically not able to fully quantify the influence of the ions upon the bulk and interfacial electric fields. We analyse the bias-assisted charge extraction (BACE) method for the case of a screened bulk electric field, and introduce a new characterisation method based on BACE, termed ion drift BACE.

As the proportion of solar energy in the global energy mix increases, photovoltaic cells have emerged as one of the fastest-growing technologies in the renewable energy sector. However, photovoltaics utilize only a limited portion of the incident solar spectrum, resulting in significant amounts of light energy being wasted as heat. This excess heat raises the surface temperature of photovoltaic cells, which in turn reduces their overall efficiency.

Dexter energy transfer (DET) of triplet electronic states is used to direct energy in photovoltaics, quench reactive singlet oxygen species in biological systems, and generate them in photodynamic therapy. However, the extent to which repeated DET between aromatic residues can lead to triplet energy migration in proteins has not been investigated. Here, we computationally describe DET rates in microtubules, actin filaments and the intermediate filament, vimentin.

Typical PEDOT:PSS hole-transporting layers frequently present some issues, including mismatched energy levels, high acidity, severe hygroscopicity, etc., all of which significantly weaken device performance. Herein, an approach of halogenated solvent treatment to modulate the physical properties of indium tin oxide (ITO) substrates is employed.

Medium-wide-bandgap (MWBG) organic photovoltaic (OPV) cells have emerged as a promising category with distinctive application possibilities, especially in environments characterized by specific light conditions, such as indoor spaces. However, there are few high-efficiency MWBG acceptors, and most of them are constructed through high-cost fused central units, which limits the industrialization of MWBG OPV cells. Here, two completely nonfused MWBG acceptors, TBT-38 and TBT-43 with different alkoxy substituent positions on the thiophene rings, are synthesized.
