A 58-year-old patient, without any notable medical history, except for alcoholism and treated hypertension, developed anemia and leukopenia with macrocytosis. Folate deficiency was diagnosed and subsequently treated. Despite folate supplementation, the hematological parameters did not normalize. Further diagnosis investigations were led to search for uncommon etiologies of anemia and leukoneutropenia. We diagnosed severe copper deficiency on the basis of decreased plasma levels of copper and ceruloplasmin. Copper supplementation improved blood counts within three months. This case illustrates hematological disorders due to copper deficiency, initially masked by an associated folate deficiency. The copper deficiency etiology was not identified in this case.

Electroactive organisms contribute to metal cycling, pollutant removal, and other redox-driven environmental processes via extracellular electron transfer (EET). Unfortunately, developing genotype-phenotype relationships for electroactive organisms is challenging because EET is necessarily removed from the cell of origin. Microdroplet emulsions, which encapsulate individual cells in aqueous droplets, have been used to study a variety of extracellular phenotypes but have not been applied to investigate EET.

Subacute-to-chronic gait instability has a broad differential diagnosis. The neurological exam can help elucidate the localization and suggest an underlying etiology of the symptomatology, which can lead to a more focused diagnostic approach. Two patients are described - 1 with a month of worsening difficulty with ambulation that evolved to bilateral hand discoordination and another with 18 months of progressive difficulty with ambulation that also then progressed to involve her bilateral hands.

Objectives: Increasing research has shown that heavy metal as a neurotoxicant affects cognitive function across the lifespan. Nutritional status may modify susceptibility to heavy metal exposures, which further impacts cognition.
Methods: We conducted a comprehensive search for cross-sectional studies, longitudinal studies, case-control studies and clinical trials on the interaction between nutrient and heavy metal, as well as mixed heavy metal exposure, in relation to cognition across the lifespan.

Introduction: Copper is an essential trace element crucial for enzyme synthesis and metabolism. Adequate copper levels are beneficial for maintaining the normal immune function of the spleen. Copper deficiency disrupts the metabolic processes within the spleen and impairs its immune function.

Background/objectives: Histamine intolerance is primarily caused by a deficiency in the diamine oxidase (DAO) enzyme at the intestinal level. The reduced histamine degradation in the gut leads to its accumulation in plasma, thereby causing multiple clinical manifestations, such as urticaria, diarrhea, headache, dyspnea, or tachycardia, among others. The dietary management of this food intolerance consists of the follow-up of a low-histamine diet, often combined with DAO supplementation.
