This study intended to evaluate the clinical efficacy and safety of colistin sulfate aerosol inhalation in combination with ceftazidime-avibactam for the treatment of pulmonary carbapenem-resistant (CRKP) infection during the peri-operative period of liver transplantation. A retrospective analysis was designed to investigate 52 patients who developed pulmonary CRKP infection after liver transplantation between December 1, 2019, and November 30, 2022. On the basis of whether they received colistin sulfate aerosol inhalation, the patients were divided into the treatment group ( = 29) and the control group ( = 23).

Article Synopsis
  • A study tested the effectiveness of inhaled colistin in treating ventilator-associated pneumonia caused by resistant bacteria, using two types of nebulizers: a vibrating mesh nebulizer (VMN) and a jet nebulizer (JN).
  • Patients receiving intravenous (IV) colistin inhalation were randomly assigned to either nebulizer type and compared to a control group receiving IV only over a period of 7 to 10 days, with a focus on clinical improvement.
  • While VMN delivered a higher dose of colistin in lab tests, both nebulizers showed similar clinical outcomes in patients, showing significant benefits over the IV-only group.

() poses a significant threat to individuals with cystic fibrosis (CF), as this bacterium is highly adaptable and resistant to antibiotics. While early-stage infections can often be eradicated with aggressive antibiotic therapy, chronic infections are nearly impossible to eliminate and require treatments that focus on long-term bacterial suppression. Without such suppression, these persistent infections can severely damage the lungs, leading to serious complications and a reduced life expectancy for CF patients.

Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of inhaled cationic antibiotics, including tobramycin (TOB) and colistin (CST), using an in vitro alginate bead model that simulates Pseudomonas aeruginosa lung biofilms.

Methods: Bioluminescent P. aeruginosa were encapsulated within alginate beads and dispersed in either Mueller-Hinton broth (MHB) or artificial sputum medium (ASM).
