A 73-year-old man underwent a surveillance CT following a laparoscopic radical nephrectomy for left-sided renal cell carcinoma 3 years earlier. He had atrial fibrillation. CT identified a large left atrial mass. The differential diagnosis of this mass was thrombus, primary cardiac tumour or cardiac metastasis secondary to his previous renal cell carcinoma. Location, size and appearance of the mass on echocardiogram were unusual for a left atrial thrombus; however, following surgical removal pathological examination confirmed this as an organised thrombus. A brief discussion on diagnostic evaluation of a left atrial mass follows the case report.

We present a case of a 72-year-old female patient with dyspnea and lipothymia. Echocardiography demonstrates an intracavitary cystic mass that fills almost all left atria causing supravalvular obstruction. The magnetic resonance image revealed a 53 × 47 × 48 mm heterogeneous mass with regular edges, tissue characterization suggested myxoma.

Background: The new Amplatzer Steerable Delivery Sheath is a delivery system designed to improve ease-of-use and procedural results of left atrial appendage closure (LAAC). We aimed to compare procedural results after switching our LAAC program at a tertiary care center with the Amulet device to the Steerable Delivery Sheath, with a control group of LAAC employing the standard sheath.

Methods: The first n = 32 consecutively treated patients at our site using the Amulet device with the Steerable Delivery Sheath were included in this retrospective analysis.

Introduction The study aimed to retrospectively evaluate the early patient outcome and left ventricular function after mitral valve replacement with a tilting disc valve and total preservation. Patients and methods This retrospective observational study includes patients who underwent mitral valve replacement using a tilting disc valve with total preservation of mitral valvular and subvalvular apparatus from July 2021 to August 2022 at a single center. Results The data were reviewed retrospectively for age, sex, comorbidities, operating time, aortic cross-clamp time, cardiopulmonary bypass time, preoperative and postoperative left ventricular ejection fraction, mean gradient across the mitral valve, left ventricular diameter, left atrial size, atrial fibrillation, complications, mortality, and early patient outcome.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the association between spontaneous echocardiographic contrast (SEC) and left atrial (LA) parameters such as size, volume, and function in cats with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM). Cats were assigned into following groups: clinically healthy cats (n=8), HCM without SEC (n=12), and HCM with SEC (n=8). Left atrial shortening fraction (LAFS%) and left atrial fractional area change (LAFAC) had statistical significance between groups.

Cardiovascular problems in rabbits in reference to hypothyroidism - a four-year retrospective study.

Pol J Vet Sci

December 2024

Department of Epizootiology and the Clinic of Infectious Diseases, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, University of Life Sciences in Lublin, Głęboka 30, 20-612 Lublin, Poland.

The effects of T4 are mainly manifested by positive ino- and chronotropism. The syndrome accompanying hypothyroidism in rabbits (impaired myocardial contractility and reduced ejection capacity) is caused by a deficiency of thyroid hormones - especially T4. The study group consisted of a total of 41 animals: 15 males and 26 females, ranging in age from 2 months to 8 years, with echocardiogram showing reduced fractional shortening (<30%), with normal results of heamatological and biochemical tests.
