Background: The T1 (rs2280091), S1 (rs3918396) and S2 (rs528557) polymorphisms in a disintegrin and metalloprotease (ADAM33) gene has been implicated in susceptibility of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). But, a number of studies have reported inconclusive results. The aim of this study is to investigate the relationship between T1 (rs2280091), S1 (rs3918396) and S2 (rs528557) polymorphisms in ADAM33 gene and COPD risk by meta-analysis.

Methods: We searched PubMed database, Embase database, Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure database and Wanfang database, covering all studies till September 5, 2012. Statistical analysis was performed using software METAGEN (STATA 12.0) and Revman5.0.

Results: A total of 2139 COPD cases and 3765 controls in 10 case-control studies were included in this study. The results showed that S2 (rs528557) and T1 (rs2280091) polymorphisms did not result in an increased or a decreased risk of COPD. The analysis described in this report demonstrated that S1 (rs3918396) polymorphism (GG + AG vs AA) was significantly associated with the total and Asian. Odds ratio (OR)total  = 1.27 [95% confidence interval (CI) 1.03-1.56, P = 0.03], ORAsian  = 1.44 (95% CI 1.13-1.83, P = 0.003) but not with Caucasians.

Conclusions: This meta-analysis suggested that S1 (rs3918396) polymorphism of ADAM33 is associated with increased risk of COPD in Asian (China) but not in Caucasians. Future studies are needed to validate our conclusions.

Background: Research has demonstrated the association between susceptibility to coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) and single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs). On the other hand, the cytotoxic T lymphocyte-associated antigen-4 (CTLA-4) serves as a pivotal inhibitory receptor with a substantial impact on the advancement of viral infections. Besides, the disintegrin and metalloproteinase33 (ADAM33) gene is associated with both asthma and heightened airway responsiveness.

Article Synopsis
  • This study investigates the genetic factors influencing pancreatic adenocarcinoma (PDAC) risk and its relationship with type 2 diabetes (T2D) and venous thromboembolism (VTE).
  • It analyzed data from 8,803 PDAC patients and 67,523 controls, using genetic analysis to identify 16 associated genes, including six novel ones.
  • Findings suggest that specific genes (HNF4G and PDX1) may link PDAC to T2D, while ABO may indicate a causal relationship of VTE affecting PDAC, calling for more research on these genetic influences.

ADAM33's Role in Asthma Pathogenesis: An Overview.

Department of Internal Medicine, Pneumology and Allergology, Wroclaw Medical University, 50-367 Wroclaw, Poland.

Asthma is a complex chronic respiratory disease characterized by airway hyperresponsiveness, inflammation, and obstruction. Many genes have been identified as associated with asthma but none with such substantial significance as the ADAM33 gene due to its role in airway remodeling and bronchial hyperresponsiveness. This review summarizes the current knowledge on the genetic and functional aspects of ADAM33 in asthma pathogenesis.

Epigenetic analysis is a fundamental part of understanding pathophysiological processes with potential applications in diagnosis, prognosis, and assessment of disease susceptibility. Epigenetic changes have been widely studied in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), but currently, there is no molecular marker used to improve the treatment of patients. Furthermore, this progressive disease is a risk factor for the development of more severe COVID-19.

Dulaglutide emerged as a promising therapeutic option for diabetes mellitus Type 2 (DM2). Owing to epigenetic similarities between the pathophysiology of DM2 and breast cancer (BC), we investigated the antitumor effect of dulaglutide. To investigate the effect of dulaglutide, we analyzed the expression of methylated gene promoter regions in BC (, and ).
