Mucormycosis is an emerging fungal infection affecting mainly immunosuppressed hosts. Cunninghamella bertholletiae causes the highest mortality among all mucormycetes. Infection by C. bertholletiae has rarely been reported in children. We present 2 children with acute leukemia and disseminated infection by C. bertholletiae, and review the relevant literature.

Mucormycosis caused by is a rare opportunistic infection in patients with hematological malignancies (HM), with high mortality rates. Herein, we first report a case of pulmonary mucormycosis (PM) with in a 25-year-old male recently diagnosed with T-lymphoblastic lymphoma (T-LBL). The diagnosis was established through chest computed tomography (CT), metagenomic next-generation sequencing (mNGS) of blood and bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF), as well as histopathological examination.

Mucormycosis is an aggressive, angioinvasive infection associated with high morbidity and mortality. The disease remains difficult to treat, with limited available antifungal drugs. Consequently, there is an urgent need to develop alternate therapeutics against mucormycosis.

Mucormycosis is receiving much more attention because of its high morbidity and extremely high mortality rate in immunosuppressed populations. In this study, we isolated a Cunnignhamella bertholletiae Z2 strain from a skin lesion of a 14 year, 9 months old girl with acute lymphoblastic leukemia who die of infection from the Z2 strain. Genome sequencing was performed after isolation and amplification of the Z2 strain to reveal potential virulence factors and pathogenic mechanisms.
