Variceal hemorrhage is a potential complication of portal hypertension. Besides medical management, endoscopic variceal band ligation (EVBL) has emerged as a promising prophylactic tool proving to be superior to sclerotherapy. EBVL is a simple procedure associated with minor complications and short recovery time. In this report, we present a case of a rare complication of complete esophageal obstruction following an EVBL procedure. Given the high numbers of such procedures performed, it is imperative that internists and specialists be aware of this unusual complication.

Neoadjuvant chemoimmunotherapy (NCIT) has improved pathological complete response and conferred survival benefits in patients with locally advanced esophageal cancer. However, surgical complications unrelated to the tumor continue to detract from patient outcomes. While the "watch-and-wait" strategy has been implemented in clinical complete responders following neoadjuvant therapy for rectal cancer, there is a lack of evidence supporting its practicability in esophageal cancer after NCIT.

Background: Gastro-esophageal variceal hemorrhage (GEVH) is one of the major causes of life-threatening gastrointestinal bleeding in children. Medical, endoscopic, angiographic, and surgical interventions can be utilized in treatment. In this case report, we describe partial splenic artery embolization for refractory GEVH due to portal vein thrombosis.

Background: Minimally invasive esophagectomy (MIE) can lead to a severe complication known as recurrent laryngeal nerve paralysis (RLNP). Existing literature supports that recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) injury is the principal etiology of RLNP, a complication potentially mitigated through intraoperative neuromonitoring (IONM). In this study, we examined the comprehensive effectiveness of IONM during esophageal resection by performing a meta-analysis.

Background: Barrett's esophagus (BE) is a precancerous condition often associated with esophageal adenocarcinoma, influenced by both genetic and environmental factors. However, there is controversy regarding the causal relationship between cerebral cortical structures and BE, with recent studies suggesting a potential neurobiological component to its multifactorial etiology. This study aims to clarify this relationship by utilizing Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis to investigate the potential causal effects of cortical structure variations on BE risk.

Background: The effectiveness of neoadjuvant immunochemotherapy (NAIC) in locally advanced esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) remains unclear. This study aims to validate the relation between early alterations in neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and clinical outcomes among individuals diagnosed with locally advanced ESCC undergoing NAIC.
Methods: We retrospectively enrolled a cohort of ESCC patients who underwent NAIC at least 1 cycle between May 2020 and October 2021 at Guangdong Provincial People's Hospital.
