The retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) is a partner of the neural retina and is indispensable for vision. In humans, proliferation and transformation (cell-type switching) of RPE cells after a traumatic injury of the neural retina causes a retinal disorder leading to loss of vision. In contrast, in certain adult amphibians such as Xenopus laevis and the newt, a similar process in RPE cells leads to regeneration of the entire retina. In this review, on the basis of accumulating evidence in basic biology and medical sciences, similarities and differences between these RPE-mediated retinal disorders and regeneration in adult vertebrates are highlighted, providing a connection to future research that should be designed to establish clues for the treatment of pathogenesis caused by RPE while promoting RPE-mediated retinal regeneration in a patient's eyes.

Oxidative stress-induced photoreceptor cell death is closely associated with the etiology of age-related macular degeneration (AMD), and sodium iodate (SI) has been widely used as an oxidant stimulus in AMD models to induce retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) and photoreceptor cell death. However, the mechanism underlying SI-induced photoreceptor cell death remains controversial and unclear. In this study, we elucidate that ferroptosis is a critical form of cell death induced by SI in photoreceptor-derived 661W cells.

Purpose: Growth of macular neovascularization (MNV) associated with development of complete retinal pigment epithelial and outer retina atrophy (cRORA) been observed in eyes neovascular age-related macular degeneration (nAMD) under effective anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) therapy. We aimed to evaluate the influence of the presence of MNV on the sensitivity of the overlaying retina both in patients with or without cRORA and to generate hypotheses about their association.
Methods: Pilot study on nAMD patients undergoing long-term anti-VEGF therapy that had also undergone microperimetry testing.

Purpose: To describe a case of SLC37A3-associated retinitis pigmentosa (RP) and associated imaging and electroretinography findings.
Methods: The patient was evaluated at Columbia University Irving Medical Center using a comprehensive multimodal imaging protocol that included color fundus photography, fundus autofluorescence (FAF), and spectral-domain optical coherence tomography. Functional assessments were conducted using full-field electroretinography (ERG), following the ISCEV standard protocols to ensure consistent and reproducible measurements of photoreceptor activity.
