Objective: Investigate the influence of apprehensive gait on activation and cocontraction of lower limb muscles of younger and older female adults.

Methods: Data of 17 younger (21.47±2.06yr) and 18 older women (65.33±3.14yr) were considered for this study. Participants walked on the treadmill at two different conditions: normal gait and apprehensive gait. The surface electromyographic signals (EMG) were recorded during both conditions on: rectus femoris (RF), vastus lateralis (VL), vastus medialis (VM), biceps femoris (BF), tibialis anterior (TA), gastrocnemius lateralis (GL), and soleus (SO).

Results: Apprehensive gait promoted greater activation of thigh muscles than normal gait (F=5.34 and p=0.007, for significant main effect of condition; RF, p=0.002; VM, p<0.001; VL, p=0.003; and BF, p=0.001). Older adults had greater cocontraction of knee and ankle stabilizer muscles than younger women (F=4.05 and p=0.019, for significant main effect of groups; VM/BF, p=0.010; TA/GL, p=0.007; and TA/SO, p=0.002).

Conclusion: Apprehensive gait promoted greater activation of thigh muscles and older adults had greater cocontraction of knee and ankle stabilizer muscles. Thus, apprehensive gait may leads to increased percentage of neuromuscular capacity, which is associated with greater cocontraction and contribute to the onset of fatigue and increased risk of falling in older people.

Falls are a major concern for people with Parkinson's disease (PwPD), but accurately assessing real-world fall risk beyond the clinic is challenging. Contemporary technologies could enable the capture of objective and high-resolution data to better inform fall risk through measurement of everyday factors (e.g.

Wearable inertial measurement units (IMUs) are being used to quantify gait characteristics that are associated with increased fall risk, but the current limitation is the lack of contextual information that would clarify IMU data. Use of wearable video-based cameras would provide a comprehensive understanding of an individual's habitual fall risk, adding context to clarify abnormal IMU data. Generally, there is taboo when suggesting the use of wearable cameras to capture real-world video, clinical and patient apprehension due to ethical and privacy concerns.

Hip microinstability diagnosis and management: a systematic review.

Knee Surg Sports Traumatol Arthrosc

January 2023

Division of Orthopaedic Surgery, Department of Surgery, McMaster University Medical Centre, 1200 Main St West, 4E15, Hamilton, ON, L8N 3Z5, Canada.

Purpose: The purpose of this systematic review is to present the most common causes, diagnostic features, treatment options and outcomes of patients with hip micro-instability.

Methods: Three online databases (MEDLINE, Embase, and PubMed) were searched from database inception March 2022, for literature addressing the diagnosis and management of patients with hip micro-instability. Given the lack of consistent reporting of patient outcomes across studies, the results are presented in a descriptive summary fashion.

Motor control of landing in an unsteady environment.

Gait Posture

June 2022

Laboratory of Physiology and Biomechanics of Locomotion, Institute of Neuroscience (IoNS), Université catholique de Louvain (UCL), Louvain-la-Neuve, Belgium.

Background: When landing from a jump or a drop, muscles contract before touchdown to anticipate imminent collision with the ground, soften ground contact and allow to return to a stable standing position without stepping or rebounding.

Research Question: This study assesses the effect of the unsteadiness of the environment on the motor control of landing. The 'unsteady environment' was induced by asking participants to perform drop landings inside an aircraft that underwent trajectories parallel to Earth's surface.

Subtrochanteric rotational osteotomy for young adults with hip pain due to femoral maltorsion.

Hip Int

November 2021

Department of Orthopaedics, Balgrist University Hospital, University of Zurich, Zurich, Switzerland.

Introduction: Femoral rotational osteotomies can be a treatment option for symptomatic femoral maltorsion. This study investigated the clinical and radiological results of subtrochanteric rotational osteotomy and its potential adverse effects, particularly on patellofemoral stability and geometry.

Methods: Retrospective consecutive series of patients undergoing subtrochanteric rotational osteotomy with hip arthroscopy.
