Xylosandrus crassiusculus Motschulsky and Xylosandrus germanus Blandford are serious ambrosia beetle pests in ornamental nurseries. Three ethanol baits, AgBio low release (LR), AgBio high release (HR), and Trécé are commercially available for use in bottle traps to determine flight activity of adult Xylosandrus spp. However, release patterns of ethanol from these baits under varying temperatures and captures of Xylosandrus spp.

Using the PROMOTE Screener to Identify Psychosocial Risk Factors for Prenatal Substance Use.

J Addict Med

November 2024

From the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities, National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, MD (AA); Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology, and Reproductive Medicine, Renaissance School of Medicine, Stony Brook University, Stony Brook, NY (ML, HP); and Department of Psychology, Stony Brook University, Stony Brook, NY (ML, CH, HP).

Introduction: There is an urgent need to improve the identification of psychosocial vulnerabilities in clinical practice (eg, stress, unstable living conditions) and examine their contribution to prenatal substance use, especially for legal substances such as alcohol, tobacco, and recently, cannabis.

Methods: We conducted a retrospective chart review of 1842 patients who completed the PROMOTE screening instrument during their first prenatal visit to outpatient clinics of a New York State health system in 6/2019-11/2020. The PROMOTE includes 18 core items to assess psychosocial vulnerabilities including the NIDA Quick Screen assessing past year substance use.

Spontaneous Bubble Growth Inside High-Saturation-Vapor-Pressure and High-Air-Solubility Liquids and Emulsion Droplets.

Langmuir

January 2025

Department of Chemical and Pharmaceutical Engineering, Faculty of Chemistry and Pharmacy, Sofia University, 1 James Bourchier Avenue, Sofia 1164, Bulgaria.

Spontaneous bubble growths in liquids are usually triggered by rapid changes in pressure or temperature that can lead to liquid gas supersaturation. Here, we report alternative scenarios of the spontaneous growths of bubbles inside a high-saturation-vapor-pressure and high-air-solubility perfluorocarbon liquid (PP1) that were observed under ambient quiescent conditions. First, we investigate spontaneous bubble growth inside the single PP1 phase, which was left to evaporate freely.

Response of Differently Structured Dental Polymer-Based Composites to Increasingly Aggressive Aging Conditions.

Nanomaterials (Basel)

January 2025

Department of Conservative Dentistry, University Hospital, Ludwig-Maximilians-University, Goethestr. 70, D-80336 Munich, Germany.

Objective: It is hypothesized that the way nano- and micro-hybrid polymer-based composites are structured and cured impacts the way they respond to aging.

Material And Methods: A polymer-ceramic interpenetrating network composite (Vita Enamic/VE), an industrially polymerized (Brillinat CriosST/BC), and an in situ light-cured composite with discrete inorganic fillers (Admira Fusion5/AF5) were selected. Specimens (308) were either cut from CAD/CAM blocks (VE/BC) or condensed and cured in white polyoxymethylene molds (AF5) and subjected to four different aging conditions ( = 22): (a) 24 h storage in distilled water at 37 °C; (b) 24 h storage in distilled water at 37 °C followed by thermal cycling for 10,000 cycles 5/55 °C (TC); (c) TC followed by storage in a 75% ethanol-water solution; and (d) TC followed by a 3-week demineralization/remineralization cycling.

: Low or moderate alcohol drinking may reduce the risk of depression, but depression may induce alcohol drinking. However, the bidirectional associations between alcohol drinking and depression were inconsistent, and many prior analyses were not properly conducted. This study explored the within-individual bidirectional associations between alcohol drinking and depressive symptoms under a causal analytic framework.
