Objective: To analyze the cytoprotective and antidiabetic activities as well as phytochemical composition of the immature inflorescence of Cocos nucifera belonging to the Arecaceae Family.
Methods: The phytochemical screening of inflorescence was done to determine the major constituents present in Cocos nucifera inflorescence. The free radical scavenging potential of inflorescence extracts were evaluated using in vitro radical scavenging assay models.
Results: The phytochemical analyses on inflorescence showed the presence of phenolic compounds, flavonoids, resins and alkaloids. The macronutrient analyses, on the other hand, showed the presence of carbohydrate, proteins and fibers. Administration of the methanol extract of coconut inflorescence to the diabetic rats showed dose dependent reduction in hyperglycemia. The cytoprotective property of coconut inflorescence was evidenced from the acute toxicological evaluation. The levels of serum aspartate aminotransferase, alanine aminotransferase, and alkaline phosphatase were significantly decreased in the diabetic rats treated with inflorescence when compared with the diabetic control rats.
Conclusion: The results obtained from the present study apparently proved the non-toxic nature and the cytoprotective and antihyperglycemic properties of coconut inflorescence.

De novo RNA-sequencing of Wolfiporia cocos mycelia cultured with filter paper composed of cellulose as the sole carbon source revealed a total of five expressed β-glucosidase genes. Among these, the β-glucosidase named Wcbg1B-1, which is composed of 539 amino acid residues and belongs to the GH1 family, had the highest mRNA abundance, accounting for 65 % of the total mRNA of the five expressed β-glucosidases. The recombinant Wcbg1B-1 was successfully expressed in Escherichia coli, with an optimal pH of 6.

This study demonstrated a novel approach to accurately estimate 5-day biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) in textile wastewater using a microbial consortium from food processing wastewater fixed on coconut fibers. Although glucose-glutamic acid (GGA) has been widely known as the most preferred substrates for microbial respiration, its calibration surprisingly resulted in an overestimation of BOD in textile wastewater due to its lower utilization rate compared to that of textile wastewater. After being adapted with a new nutrient environment composed of GGA and textile wastewater, the adapted packed-bed bioreactors (PBBRs) was capable of accurate estimation of BOD in textile wastewater using GGA standard solution.

In this work, the lipidomic analysis on polar components of almond, coconut, and soy beverages was performed by liquid chromatography quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry. A comparison with bovine milk was also performed. A total of 30 subclasses of polar lipids, belonging mainly to glycerophospholipids and sphingolipids, and a total of 572 molecular species were identified.
