New method of analyzing NIRS data from prefrontal cortex at rest.

The aim of this study was to develop a simple technique for objective assessment of mental stress levels by measuring hemoglobin concentration changes in the bilateral prefrontal cortex (PFC) at rest, employing two-channel near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS). Each subject was instructed to think about nothing in particular for 3 min and then to complete the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) test. Next, NIRS measurements were taken and the left/right asymmetry of PFC activity at rest was evaluated by calculating the proposed Laterality Index at Rest (LIR). There was a significant positive correlation between the LIR and STAI score in 39 subjects. The present method allowed evaluation of mental stress level from NIRS data in the PFC at rest.

Reimagining apnea monitoring in the neonatal ICU.

Purpose Of Review: This review outlines the prevalence and complications of apneas and intermittent hypoxemic events in preterm infants, examines current monitoring limitations in neonatal ICUs (NICUs), and explores emerging technologies addressing these challenges.

Recent Findings: New evidence from the Prematurity-Related Ventilatory Control (Pre-Vent) study, which analyzed cardiorespiratory data from 717 extremely preterm infants, exposes the varying frequency, duration, and severity of apneas, intermittent hypoxemia, bradycardias, and periodic breathing during hospitalization, and highlights the negative impact of intermittent hypoxemia on pulmonary outcomes at discharge. Although traditional monitoring methods cannot differentiate between apnea types and quantify their burden, recent advancements in sensor technologies and data integration hold promise for improving real-time detection and evaluation of apneas in the NICU.

Intermittent theta burst stimulation for negative symptoms in schizophrenia patients with mild cognitive impairment: a randomized controlled trail.

Background: This study aims to evaluate the intervention effect of intermittent Theta burst stimulation (iTBS) on bilateral dorsomedial prefrontal cortex (DMPFC) for negative symptoms in schizophrenia using functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) to confirm the therapeutic significance of DMPFC in treating negative symptoms and provide new evidence for schizophrenia treatment and research.

Method: Thirty-nine schizophrenia patients with negative symptoms and mild cognitive impairment were randomly divided into a treatment group (n=20) and a control group (n=19). The treatment group received iTBS in bilateral DMPFC.

In recent years, NIRS has shown unique advantages in the auxiliary diagnosis of schizophrenia, and the introduction of bibliometrics has provided a macro perspective for research in this field. Despite the opportunities brought about by these technological developments, remaining challenges require multidisciplinary approach to devise a reliable and accurate diagnosis system for schizophrenia.
