Rice stripe virus (RSV), Rice black-streaked dwarf virus (RBSDV), and Rice dwarf virus (RDV) are major rice-infecting viruses in Korea that can cause serious crop losses. A one-step multiplex reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (mRT-PCR) was developed for the simultaneous detection of these rice viruses. Three sets of specific primers targeted to the capsid protein coding genes of RSV, RBSDV, and RDV were used to amplify fragments that were 703 bp, 485 bp, and 252 bp, respectively. The one-step mRT-PCR assay proved to be a sensitive and rapid method for detecting the three rice viruses. This method could be used to facilitate better control of rice viruses.

The chemical modification of DNA and proteins is an efficient way of regulating molecular and biological function and affects a plethora of signalling pathways in eukaryotes. Similarly, recent progress in epitranscriptomics shows that RNA modifications also play crucial roles in diverse biological processes. Since their discovery in the 1970s, scientists have attempted to decipher the identity and functions of these modifications in different biological systems.

Rice stripe mosaic virus (RSMV) is the sole cytoplasmic rhabdovirus documented in naturally infected rice plants. It encodes P6, which induces delayed heading and reduces yield in infected rice plants. P6 of RSMV interacts with OsHAPL1, facilitating the interaction between OsHAPL1 and DTH8, resulting in delayed rice heading under long day conditions.

Background: The prevention and control of infectious disease outbreaks in carceral settings face unique challenges. Transmission modeling is a powerful tool for understanding and addressing these challenges, but reviews of modeling work in this context pre-date the proliferation of outbreaks in jails and prisons during the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic. We conducted a systematic review of studies using transmission models of respiratory infections in carceral settings before and during the pandemic.

Background: Ireland's COVID-19 response combined extensive SARS-CoV-2 testing to estimate incidence, with whole genome sequencing (WGS) for genome surveillance. As an island with two political jurisdictions-Northern Ireland (NI) and Republic of Ireland (RoI)-and access to detailed passenger travel data, Ireland provides a unique setting to study virus introductions and evaluate public health measures. Using a substantial Irish genomic dataset alongside global data from GISAID, this study aimed to trace the introduction and spread of SARS-CoV-2 across the island.

Biogeographic distribution of prokaryotic and eukaryotic communities has been extensively studied. Yet, our knowledge of viral biogeographic patterns, the corresponding driving factors and the virus-resistome associations is still limited. Here, using metagenomic analysis, we explored the viral communities and profiles of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in 30 fields of paddy (rice soils, RS) and upland soils (corn soils, CS) at a regional scale across black soil region of Northeast China.
