The prevention, control and reduction of livestock diseases require a good understanding of how the underlying causative agents are transmitted. On livestock premises the rate of spread is strongly determined by the contact, both direct and indirect, between infectious and susceptible individuals. Here we consider contact amongst barn-housed dairy cattle, one of the most important UK livestock sectors. A novel observational study of faecal spread indicates that the level of contact an individual animal can have with other herd members via this transmission pathway is very high (80 ± 4% within sub-units). Additional observational studies indicate the possible level of direct physical contact an animal has with other group members (an approximate Poisson distribution with a mean rate of 14.4 distinct individuals per hour), and the potential for indirect transfer via inanimate objects by considering the proportion of the herd that touched a given gatepost in the milking parlour each day (43 ± 6%). Results suggest that mixing may be considered homogeneous for certain pathogens, but that the spread of diseases transmitted along only specific routes requires the incorporation of within group contact structures.

Birds of prey raised in captivity have direct contact with the environment and are fed raw meat various animals, which increases the risk of infections caused by parasites, including endoparasites. The aim of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of endoparasites in predatory birds of the orders Accipitriformes and Falconiformes that are used in falconry in Poland. Fresh feces were sampled from 52 birds, including 16 saker falcons (Falco cherrug), 8 lanner falcons (Falco biarmicus), 7 peregrine falcons (Falco peregrinus), 8 Harris's hawks (Parabuteo unicinctus), 7 Eurasian goshawks (Accipiter gentilis), 3 common kestrels (Falco tinnunculus), 1 Eurasian sparrowhawk (Accipiter nisus), 1 red-tailed hawk (Buteo jamaicensis), and 1 common buzzard (Buteo buteo).

Background: Ultracongruent (UC) total knee replacement (TKR) designs, serving as alternatives to posterior stabilized (PS) and cruciate retaining (CR) designs, lack conclusive evidence regarding posterior femoral rollback. This study aimed to compare intraoperative posterior femoral rollback and maximal knee flexion between UC and PS inserts, addressing the paucity of literature on femoral rollback achieved with UC designs in total knee replacement.

Methods: A consecutive cohort of 20 patients undergoing robotic-assisted primary total knee replacement, posterior femoral rollback and maximal intraoperative knee flexion were assessed.

We study a local-to-global inequality for spectral invariants of Hamiltonians whose supports have a "large enough" disjoint tubular neighborhood on semipositive symplectic manifolds. As a corollary, we deduce this inequality for disjointly supported Hamiltonians that are -small (when fixing the supports). In particular, we present the first examples of such an inequality when the Hamiltonians are not necessarily supported in domains with contact-type boundaries, or when the ambient manifold is irrational.
