Mantidis Oötheca is commonly used Chinese medicine. Because of the used medicinal part is oötheca and many mantis species can yield ootheca, it is not possible to identify its original animal accurately. There is no unanimous conclusion about the corresponding relationship between Mantis and Mantidis Oötheca (Sangpiaoxiao). This relationship is the basis of the Mantidis Oötheca research. Our study combined the methods of artificial incubation oötheca and capture the living mantis to identify the species of Mantis and Mantidis Oötheca. The results showed that the origin insects of Mantidis Oötheca was Tenodera, Hierodula and Statilia genus insects. This has laid a foundation for further study of Mantidis Oötheca.

Three pairs of enantiomers and one achiral molecule that are new ethylated derivatives of sulfur and nitrogen-containing compounds named mantidisamides E-H (-), along with twenty known ones (-), were derived from the ethanol extract of Saussure. The structures of these new compounds and their absolute configurations were assigned on the basis of spectroscopic analyses and computational methods. The assessment of activities in NRK-52e cells induced by TGF-β1 demonstrated that the previously undescribed compounds and exhibited a significant capacity to inhibit the expression of proteins (fibronectin, collagen I, and -SMA).

Renal interstitial fibrosis (RIF), a progressive process affecting the kidneys in chronic kidney disease (CKD), currently lacks an effective therapeutic intervention. Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) has shown promise in reducing RIF and slowing CKD progression. In this study, we demonstrated the dose-dependent attenuation of RIF by Ootheca mantidis (SPX), a commonly prescribed TCM for CKD, in a mouse model of unilateral ureteral obstruction (UUO).

Mantidis Ootheca (Sangpiaoxiao, mantis egg case) is a typical multi-origin Chinese medicinal material. The Chinese Pharmacopoeia stipulates that the Mantidis Ootheca originates from three species of Mantis: Tenodera sinensis, Statilia maculate, and Hierodula patellifera. However, Mantidis Ootheca mainly relies on field collection, which leads to confusion of its actual origin in the market.

As a traditional medicine with potential antioxidant effects, egg cases (Mantidis ootheca) are a potential source of new bioactive substances. Herein, three new -acetyldopamine derivatives, namely, (+)-tenoderin A (), (-)-tenoderin A (), and tenoderin B (), along with thirteen known compounds (-), were isolated from a 70% EtOH extract of . egg cases.
