Five-fold symmetric substituted corannulene derivatives that display liquid-crystalline behavior and organogelation properties were prepared by coupling of N-azidoethyl long-chain fatty acid amides to sym-pentabutynyl corannulenes via dipolar cycloaddition chemistry.

(Mtb) is the causative agent of tuberculosis, the world's deadliest infectious disease. Mtb uses a variety of mechanisms to evade the human host's defenses and survive intracellularly. Mtb's oxidative stress response enables Mtb to survive within activated macrophages, an environment with reactive oxygen species and low pH.

Background: Dialysis Access (DA) stenosis impacts hemodialysis efficiency and patient health, necessitating exams for early lesion detection. Ultrasound is widely used due to its non-invasive, cost-effective nature. Assessing all patients in large hemodialysis facilities strains resources and relies on operator expertise.

The twin boundaries and inherent lattice strain of five-fold twin (5-FT) structures offer a promising and innovative approach to tune nanocrystal configurations and properties, enriching nanomaterial performance. However, a comprehensive understanding of the nonclassical growth models governing 5-FT nanocrystals remains elusive, largely due to the constraints of their small thermodynamically stable size and complex twin configurations. Here, we conducted in situ investigations to elucidate the atomic-scale mechanisms driving size-dependent and twin configuration-related aggregation phenomena between 5-FT and other nanoparticles at the atomic scale.

Objectives: The study compared the utility of two approaches for collecting real-world listening experiences to predict hearing-aid preference: a retrospective questionnaire (Speech, Spatial, and Qualities of Hearing Scale [SSQ]) and in-situ Ecological Momentary Assessment (EMA). The rationale being that each approach likely provides different and yet complementary information. In addition, it was examined how self-reported listening activity and hearing-aid data-logging can augment EMAs for individualized and contextualized hearing outcome assessments.

Article Synopsis
  • Researchers developed symmetrically branched AuCu alloy nanocrystals with adjustable shapes and sizes, leading to unique optical properties.
  • By changing the ratio of gold (Au) to copper (Cu) in the synthesis process, they created Y-shaped tripods and star-shaped pentapods.
  • The study also improved photocatalytic performance by attaching CdS nanocrystals to the tips of these structures and adding an AgS layer to enhance charge separation, achieving a high hydrogen evolution rate.
