Intestinal barrier damage causes an imbalance in the intestinal flora and microbial environment, promoting a variety of gastrointestinal diseases. This study aimed to explore the mechanism by which adipose-derived stem cells (ADSCs) repair intestinal barrier damage. The human colon adenocarcinoma cell line Caco-2 and rats were treated with lipopolysaccharide (LPS) to establish in vitro and in vivo models, respectively, of intestinal barrier damage.

A new method for quantifying glyoxalase II activity in biological samples.

Biol Methods Protoc

September 2024

Department of Chemistry, College of Science, University of Babylon, Hillah City 51002, Iraq.

Glyoxalase II (Glo II) is a crucial enzyme in the glyoxalase system, and plays a vital role in detoxifying harmful metabolites and maintaining cellular redox balance. Dysregulation of Glo II has been linked to various health conditions, including cancer and diabetes. This study introduces a novel method using 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazine (2,4-DNPH) to measure Glo II activity.

Background: Ischemic stroke belongs to "apoplexy" and its pathogenesis is characterized by qi deficiency and blood stasis combining with phlegm-damp clouding orifices. Buqi-Huoxue-Tongnao decoction (BHTD) is a traditional Chinese medicine formula for qi deficiency, blood stasis and phlegm obstruction syndrome. However, its efficacy and potential mechanism on ischemic stroke are still unclear.

Article Synopsis
  • Vaginitis is linked to harmful bacteria and a lack of good lactobacilli, prompting researchers to explore lactobacilli supplementation as a treatment strategy.
  • The study involved sequencing the genomes of 98 isolated strains to identify candidates for probiotics based on their genetic profiles, which included factors like metabolite production and resistance to harsh conditions.
  • Two exceptional strains, LG55-27 and TM13-16, were effective in reducing bacterial vaginosis in a rat model, demonstrating their potential for both oral and vaginal treatment options.

Glycolic acid and D-lactate-putative products of DJ-1-restore neurodegeneration in FUS - and SOD1-ALS.

Translational Neurodegeneration Section "Albrecht Kossel", Department of Neurology, University Medical Center Rostock, University of Rostock, Rostock, Germany

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) leads to death within 2-5 yr. Currently, available drugs only slightly prolong survival. We present novel insights into the pathophysiology of (SOD1)- and in particular (FUS)-ALS by revealing a supposedly central role of glycolic acid (GA) and D-lactic acid (DL)-both putative products of the Parkinson's disease associated glyoxylase DJ-1.
