Purified neuraminidase preparation from Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae is studied biochemically. The main physicochemical characteristics of the enzyme are determined: molecular mass, isoelectric point, electrophoretic mobility, chemical nature, UV spectrum, substrate specificity, etc. The obtained data are compared to those for other bacterial neuraminidases.

Glycoconjugates are a vast class of biomolecules implicated in biological processes important for human health and disease. The structural complexity of glycoconjugates remains a challenge to deciphering their precise biological roles and for their development as biomarkers and therapeutics. Human glycoconjugates on the outside of the cell are modified with sialic (neuraminic) acid residues at their termini.

Sialic acids are commonly found on the terminal ends of biologically important carbohydrates, including intestinal mucin O-linked glycans. Pathogens such as Clostridium perfringens, the causative agent of necrotic enteritis in poultry and humans, have the ability to degrade host mucins and colonize the mucus layer, which involves removal of the terminal sialic acid by carbohydrate-active enzymes (CAZymes). Here, we present the structural and biochemical characterization of the GH33 catalytic domains of the three sialidases of C.

Elevated bacterial sialidase activity in the female genital tract is strongly associated with poor health outcomes including preterm birth and bacterial vaginosis (BV). These negative effects may arise from sialidase-mediated degradation of the protective mucus layer in the cervicovaginal environment. Prior biochemical studies of vaginal bacterial sialidases have focused solely on the BV-associated organism .

Influenza remains a global public health threat, and the development of new antivirals is crucial to combat emerging drug-resistant influenza strains. In this study, we report the synthesis and evaluation of a sialyl lactosyl (TS)-bovine serum albumin (BSA) conjugate as a potential multivalent inhibitor of the influenza virus. The key trisaccharide component, TS, was efficiently prepared via a chemoenzymatic approach, followed by conjugation to dibenzocyclooctyne-modified BSA via a strain-promoted azide-alkyne cycloaddition reaction.
