This study sought to compare the efficacy of digital photographs and graphic software for shade matching to that of conventional visual shade selection. Thirty-one postgraduate students were used and shade selection was analyzed through 1 of 4 different techniques: digital spectrophotometer, conventional visual shade selection, visual shade selection assisted by digital photography, and shade selection by color difference formulas and computer software. Shade selection done with digital photography and graphic software using color difference formulas offered better and statistically significant shade matching compared to conventional visual shade selection and visual shade selection assisted by digital photography.

The optimal color space enables advantageous smartphone-based colorimetric sensing.

Biosens Bioelectron

December 2024

Biophotonic Nanosensors Laboratory, Centro de Física Aplicada y Tecnología Avanzada (CFATA), Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM), Querétaro, 76230, Mexico. Electronic address:

Smartphone-based colorimetric (bio)sensing is a promising alternative to conventional detection equipment for on-site testing, but it is often limited by sensitivity to lighting conditions. These issues are usually avoided using housings with fixed light sources, increasing the cost and complexity of the on-site test, where simplicity, portability, and affordability are a priority. In this study, we demonstrate that careful optimization of color space can significantly boost the performance of smartphone-based colorimetric sensing, enabling housing-free, illumination-invariant detection.

[Effects of different drying methods on content of main chemical compounds in Callicarpae Nudiflorae Folium].

Zhongguo Zhong Yao Za Zhi

December 2024

State Key Laboratory for Quality Ensurance and Sustainable Use of Dao-di Herbs, National Resource Center for Chinese Materia Medica, China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences Beijing 100700, China.

This study aims to identify the main chemical compounds, investigate the effects of different drying methods on the quality, and determine the appropriate drying method of Callicarpae Nudiflorae Folium. UPLC-UV-Q-TOF-MS was employed to characterize and identify 35 main compounds, including phenylethanoid glycosides, flavonoids, and iridoids in Callicarpae Nudiflorae Folium. A method for the simultaneous determination of 8 compounds with strong UV absorption and high content was established to evaluate the quality of Callicarpae Nudiflorae Folium dried by different methods.

Tooth shade selection is a fundamental factor in the success of dental restorations, and visual impairment may adversely affect this process. The aim of this cross-sectional clinical study was to determine whether visual impairment influences shade selection using two methods: spectrophotometry and shade guides. : The sample consisted of 2796 maxillary and mandibular teeth, and shade selection was measured subjectively with a shade guide (VITA Classic, VITA Zahnfabrik) and objectively with a spectrophotometer (VITA Easyshade V, VITA Zahnfabrik, Bad Säckingen, Germany).

Electrochemical energy conversion technologies include proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) where proton interchange is an alternative to diesel distributed generation, and PEMFCs are considered as a promising backup power source and a tool to regulate power consumption. Some of the major benefits of these PEMFCs especially in power system applications include low emission of carbon, fast load following capability, no noise and high start-up reliability. It is challenging to find the best PEMFC parameters because the model is complex and the problem is nonlinear; not all optimization algorithms can solve this problem.

Plants encounter various environmental stresses throughout development, including shade, high light, drought, hypoxia, extreme temperatures, and metal toxicity, all of which adversely affect growth and productivity. Organic acids (OAs), besides serving as intermediates in the tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle, play crucial roles in multiple metabolic pathways and cellular compartments, including mitochondrial metabolism, amino acid metabolism, the glyoxylate cycle, and the photosynthetic mechanisms of C4 and CAM plants. OAs contribute to stress tolerance by acting as root chelating agents, regulating ATP production, and providing reducing power for detoxifying reactive oxygen species (ROS).
