Background: Chronic idiopathic acrocyanosis is a common acrosyndrome. Methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) is an enzyme involved in the metabolism of folate. Two functional polymorphisms of MTHFR have been identified, C677T and A1298C.

Objective: To compare the prevalence of these two MTHFR polymorphisms in patients with chronic idiopathic acrocyanosis to a control group.

Materials And Methods: The study was conducted on 43 consecutive patients with acrocyanosis and on 100 controls.

Results: The risk of acrocyanosis was significantly higher in patients homozygous for the mutation c.677C>T compared to those with no mutation (OR = 4.8 (95%CI 1.5-14.9)). The homozygosity TT was associated with an increased homocysteine level.

Conclusion: On the basis of our findings, acrocyanosis could be considered as a cutaneous sign of a "latent" cardiovascular risk. This should be taken into account particularly when acrocyanosis is associated either to other medical conditions that determine vessel wall damage or to conditions that predispose to the risk of thromboembolism.

Understanding the role of perfectionism in contributing to internalizing symptoms in youth with juvenile idiopathic arthritis.

J Pediatr Psychol

December 2024

Cassie and Friends: A Society for Children with Juvenile Arthritis and Other Rheumatic Diseases, Vancouver, BC, Canada.

Objective: Youth with juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) experience elevated rates of internalizing symptoms, although more research is required to understand this phenomenon. Perfectionism, a multidimensional personality trait that involves dimensions such as striving for flawlessness (self-oriented perfectionism) and feeling that others demand perfection (socially-prescribed perfectionism), is a well-known risk factor for internalizing symptoms that has received minimal attention in pediatric populations. Preregistered hypotheses explored the relationships between youth and parent perfectionism and symptoms of depression and anxiety in youth with JIA, as mediated by (a) youth/parent negative self-evaluations and (b) youth self-concealment.

Early Integration of Palliative Care in Non-Oncological Patients: A Systematic Review.

J Pain Symptom Manage

January 2025

Faculty of Medicine, University of Lisbon, Lisboa, Portugal; Bento Menni Palliative Care Unit, Sintra, Portugal. Electronic address:

Introduction: Palliative care (PALC) is traditionally linked to end-of-life cancer care but also benefits advanced non-oncological diseases.

Objectives: This systematic review evaluated the impact of early PALC on quality of life (QOL), symptom management, advance care planning (ACP), and healthcare resource utilization (HRU) among non-oncological patients.

Methods: PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus databases were searched for randomized controlled trials and clinical studies published between January 2018 and April 2023.

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a worldwide public health problem. Podocyte damage is a hallmark of glomerular diseases including focal segmental glomerulosclerosis (FSGS) and one of the leading causes of CKD. Lysine methylation is a crucial post-translational modification.

Background: Autoimmune pancreatitis (AIP) is a form of chronic pancreatitis that presents clinically with obstructive icterus, histologically with infiltration of pancreatic parenchyma by inflammatory cells leading to chronic inflammation with fibrosis, and therapeutically with good response to corticosteroid therapy. Clinically, it may resemble malignant disease, making diagnosis difficult and requiring a multidisciplinary team (gastroenterologist, endoscopist, radiologist, surgeon, pathologist). Two types of AIP are distinguished.

Pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) is a disease characterized by increased pulmonary vascular resistance and right heart failure, with emerging evidence suggesting a key role for immune dysregulation in its pathogenesis. This study aimed to assess the involvement of lymphocytes, particularly regulatory T cells (Tregs), and the expression of immune checkpoint molecules PD-1 and PD-L1 on peripheral blood subpopulations in patients diagnosed with PAH. The study involved 25 patients; peripheral blood mononuclear cells were isolated and subsequently analyzed using flow cytometry to quantify the Treg cell percentage and evaluate PD-1 and PD-L1 expression across the T and B cells.
