Alveolar distraction osteogenesis in posterior atrophic mandible: a case report on a new technical approach.

Implant Dent

Dental Clinic, Department of Biomedical and Neuromotor Science, University of Bologna, Bologna, Italy.

Published: August 2013

Purpose: To report a clinical case of dental implant rehabilitation of an atrophic posterior mandible with the usage of a new alveolar distraction protocol.

Materials And Methods: A posterior atrophic mandible was treated with distraction osteogenesis; after the first phase of latency (10 days), the activation phase (24 days), and the consolidation phase (30 days), the distractor was removed, and 2 implants were placed; 4 months thereafter, the fixtures were provisionally loaded.

Results: No complications were recorded during the treatment. At the end of the activation phase, a mean of 5 mm of vertical bone augmentation was obtained, and it allowed the placement of two 10-mm long fixtures. No periimplant bone resorption was detected at the time of definitive prosthetic loading.

Conclusions: The proposed protocol secured a sound prosthetic rehabilitation on an otherwise atrophied posterior mandible so as to avoid grafting procedures.

Background: This study aimed to evaluate alveolar bone height enhancement using a custom-made distractor to evaluate its ability to support dental implants.

Method: The left mandibular premolars of nine dogs were extracted, followed by alveoloplasty to simulate an atrophic ridge. The dogs were divided into three groups: groups I and II received distractors followed by dental implants, while group III received implants alone.

Aim: To assess the possibility of vertical alveolar ridge augmentation by means of activation of the periosteum.

Materials And Methods: Six adult male Beagle dogs were used for the study. All premolars and first molars were extracted, and one vertical saucer-shaped bony defect was created on each side of the mandible.

Objective:  The purpose of this study was to assess the effects of virtual reality (VR) in reducing pain and anxiety levels in children. The study also compared active and passive distraction methods using VR during the delivery of inferior alveolar nerve blocks (IANBs) in dental procedures in children.

Material And Methods:  The study comprised 45 preschool patients, aged between 4 and 6 years, with no prior dental anesthetic experience.

The study aims to assess and classify complications in patients treated for maxillary transverse deficiency using surgically assisted rapid maxillary/palatal expansion (SARME/SARPE) under general anesthesia. The classification of the complications aimed to assess the difficulty of their treatment as well as estimate its real cost. : The retrospective study covered 185 patients who underwent surgery for a skeletal deformity in the form of maxillary constriction or in which maxillary constriction was one of its components treated by a team of maxillofacial surgeons at one center (97 females and 88 males, aged 15 to 47 years, mean age 26.
