The aim of the study was to evaluate sialic acids and hyaluronan expression, anionic components important for the structure and function of the renal tubulointerstitial compartment, in the early stages of sepsis. Two groups of rats were used: (1) sham-operated controls; (2) cecal ligation and puncture (CLP) (polymicrobial sepsis model). A search for microbial growth was made in the peritoneal fluid to document infection. Tubular function was evaluated by means of urinary protein loss, urinary Na(+) and urea excretion. Kidney samples were processed to analyze histology, sialic acids (lectin histochemistry) and hyaluronan (immunohistochemistry) expression. Results showed increased urinary protein loss and fractional excretion of Na(+) and urea reduction in the CLP group. Histological changes, particularly in the cortex and in proximal tubules of the CLP group, were observed. In septic rats, compared to controls, sialic acids decreased in amount and their acetylation increased in the tubules, although to a lesser extent in the proximal portion. Hyaluronan was expressed in the medullary interstitium and in a few areas of cortex in controls. In septic rats it increased in the cortical interstitium and appeared in proximal tubules. These results suggest correlation between expression changes of anionic components and tubulointerstitium morphofunctional alterations during sepsis. A role of these molecules in protection/defense and repair processes may be suggested.

Ecosystem services provided by terrestrial biomes, such as moisture recycling and carbon assimilation, are crucial components of the water, energy, and biogeochemical cycles. These biophysical processes are influenced by climate variability driven by distant ocean-atmosphere interactions, commonly referred to as teleconnections. This study aims to identify which teleconnections most significantly affect key biophysical processes in South America's two largest biomes: The Amazon and Cerrado.

In order to study the change rule of freshness and acid ions in reconstituted tobacco slurry, the content changes of 17 organic acids and 5 inorganic anions in reconstituted tobacco slurry with different residence times under confined condition were determined by on-line solid-phase extraction ion chromatography in this study. The results showed that the changes of acetic acid, nitrate ion and isovaleric acid in different reconstituted tobacco slurries with oscillation time were regular and consistent, and the trends of the changes of acetic acid, nitrate ion and isovaleric acid in different reconstituted tobacco slurries with oscillation time were correlated with each other in a highly significant way. Taking the evaluation of olfactory aroma and sensory quality qualities of reconstituted tobacco pulps with different residence times as a benchmark, it was found that the variation patterns of nitrate ions and isovaleric acid in reconstituted tobacco pulps with oscillation time were consistent with the variation patterns of olfactory and sensory qualities in the process of closed oscillation; compared with the fresh pulp, the olfactory aroma and sensory qualities of tobacco pulps had unpleasant odours appearing when the content of nitrate ions was reduced by about 48%.

Infections caused by persistent, drug-resistant bacteria pose significant challenges in inflammation treatment, often leading to severe morbidity and mortality. Herein, the photosensitizer rhodamine derivatives are selected as the light-trapping dye and the electron-rich substituent N-nitrosoaminophen as the nitric oxide (NO)-releasing component to develop a multifunctional (deep) red-light activatable NO photocage/photodynamic prodrug for efficient treatment of wounds and diabetic foot infections. The prodrug, RhB-NO-2 integrates antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT), NO sterilization, and NO-mediated anti-inflammatory properties within a small organic molecule and is capable of releasing NO and generating Reactive oxygen species (ROS) when exposed to (deep) red laser (660 nm).

The dried capitulum of chrysanthemums is a traditional material in scented tea, and the kill-green process is a critical step in determining their quality. However, the changes in the physicochemical properties during kill-green and the mechanisms by which these changes affect drying characteristics, metabolic components, and aroma profiles remain unclear. Therefore, this study investigated the changes in water status, polyphenol oxidase and peroxidase activities, and microstructure during high-humidity air impingement kill-green (HHAIK) and steam kill-green (SK), and their effects on drying behavior, color, phytochemicals, and volatile profile of dried chrysanthemums.
