Diagnosis of neuromuscular diseases is based on subjective visual assessment of biopsies from patients by the pathologist specialist. A system for objective analysis and classification of muscular dystrophies and neurogenic atrophies through muscle biopsy images of fluorescence microscopy is presented. The procedure starts with an accurate segmentation of the muscle fibers using mathematical morphology and a watershed transform. A feature extraction step is carried out in two parts: 24 features that pathologists take into account to diagnose the diseases and 58 structural features that the human eye cannot see, based on the assumption that the biopsy is considered as a graph, where the nodes are represented by each fiber, and two nodes are connected if two fibers are adjacent. A feature selection using sequential forward selection and sequential backward selection methods, a classification using a Fuzzy ARTMAP neural network, and a study of grading the severity are performed on these two sets of features. A database consisting of 91 images was used: 71 images for the training step and 20 as the test. A classification error of 0% was obtained. It is concluded that the addition of features undetectable by the human visual inspection improves the categorization of atrophic patterns.

Ultrasonic time-of-flight diffraction (TOFD) technique is applied to non-destructive testing in engineering, but the dead zone influences its applicable range. Alternative TOFD techniques adopt the indirect diffracted waves having long propagation times to decouple from the lateral wave and detect near-surface defects. It should be noted that the applicability of these diffracted waves varies with parameter conditions employed for detection, e.

It is common to make risky decisions under time pressure. However, there are ongoing debates regarding the interpretation of the intrinsic mechanisms through which time pressure influences risky decision-making. The current study, combining a sequential risk-taking task, behavioral modeling, and time-resolved multivariate pattern analysis on electroencephalography signals, explored the intrinsic mechanisms underlying the influence of time pressure on risky decision-making.

Sea buckthorn, rich in nutrients and bioactive compounds such as phenolics, fatty acids, and vitamins, presents processing challenges due to its intense sourness and bland flavor. This study addresses key challenges in flavor enhancement and sourness reduction by evaluating the effects of pectinase treatment and inoculation sequences on the overall quality. Optimal malic acid degradation and antioxidant occurred when Schizosaccharomyces pombe (S.

Hub regions in the brain, recognized for their roles in ensuring efficient information transfer, are vulnerable to pathological alterations in neurodegenerative conditions, including Alzheimer's disease (AD). Computational simulations and animal experiments have hinted at the theory of activity-dependent degeneration as the cause of this hub vulnerability. However, two critical issues remain unresolved.
