Enveloping distribution sampling was used to calculate free-enthalpy changes associated with single amino acid mutations for a pair of proteins, GA95 and GB95, that show 95% sequence identity yet fold into topologically different structures. Of the L → A, I → F, and L → Y mutations at positions 20, 30, and 45, respectively, of the 56-residue sequence, the first and the last contribute the most to the free-enthalpy difference between the native and non-native sequence-structure combinations, in agreement with the experimental findings for this protein pair. The individual free-enthalpy changes are almost sequence-independent in the four-strand/one-helix structure, the stable form of GB95, while in the three-helix bundle structure, the stable form of GA95, an interplay between residues 20 and 45 is observed.

Temperature Effect on Ionic Polymers Removal from Aqueous Solutions Using Activated Carbons Obtained from Biomass.

Materials (Basel)

December 2022

Department of Applied Chemistry, Faculty of Chemistry, Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań, Uniwersytetu Poznańskiego 8, 61-614 Poznań, Poland.

The main aim of this study was the determination of temperature influence on adsorption mechanisms of anionic poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) and cationic polyethylenimine (PEI) on the surface of activated carbons (AC) obtained via chemical activation of nettle (NE) and sage (SA) herbs. All measurements were performed at pH 3 at three temperature values, i.e.

We measure the entropy of formation of the interface upon anion adsorption (Cl, Br I and SO) on Au(111) as an important indicator for the structure, order and composition of the interface. The entropy of formation of the interface exhibits a rather universal behaviour for all anions with a steep decrease upon initial adsorption followed by a shallow minimum at intermediate anion coverages and a strong increase close to the completion of the adsorbate adlayer. The strong variation of the entropy signals significant entropic contributions to the free enthalpy of the adsorption process and thus the stability of the adsorbed phase.

We investigate compositional changes of an electrochemical interface upon polarization with electrochemical microcalorimetry. From the heat exchanged at a Au(111) electrode upon sulfate adsorption, we determine the reaction entropy of the adsorption process for both neutral and acidic solutions, where the dominant species in solution changes from SO to HSO . In neutral solution, the reaction entropy is about 40 J mol K more positive than that in acidic solution over the complete sulfate adsorption region.

Oscillatory Mechanism of α-Fe(N) ↔ γ'-FeN Phase Transformations during Nanocrystalline Iron Nitriding.

Materials (Basel)

January 2022

Department of Inorganic Chemical Technology and Environment Engineering, Faculty of Chemical Technology and Engineering, West Pomeranian University of Technology in Szczecin, Piastów Ave. 42, 71-065 Szczecin, Poland.

The kinetics of nanocrystalline α-iron nitriding to γ'-iron nitride in an ammonia atmosphere was studied at 598-648 K and at atmospheric pressure. Oscillatory changes in nitriding reaction rates depending on nitrogen concentration in a solid sample were observed. This phenomenon was explained by a gradual change in the iron active surface coverage degree, with nitrogen resulting from a gradual change in the free enthalpy of nitrogen segregation.

In this paper, a novel structured carbon foam has been prepared from argan nut shell (ANS) was developed and applied in bisphenol A (BPA) removal from water. The results showed that the prepared carbon foam remove 93% of BPA (60 mg/L). The BPA equilibrium data obeyed the Liu isotherm, displaying a maximum uptake capacity of 323.
