The locomotor capacity of amphibians depends strongly on temperature and hydration. Understanding the potential interactions between these variables remains an important challenge because temperature and water availability covary strongly in natural environments. We explored the effects of temperature and hydration on the hopping speeds of Rhinella granulosa, a small toad from the semiarid Caatinga and the Atlantic Rain Forest in Brazil. We asked whether thermal and hydric states interact to determine performance and whether toads from the Caatinga differ from their conspecifics from the Atlantic Forest. Both dehydration and cooling impaired hopping speed, but effects were independent of one another. In comparison to performances of other anurans, the performance of R. granulosa was far less sensitive to dehydration. Consequently, dehydrated members of this species may be able to sustain performance through high body temperatures, which agrees with the exceptional heat tolerance of this species. Surprisingly, toads from both the Caatinga and the Atlantic Forest were relatively insensitive to dehydration. This observation suggests that migration or gene flow between toads from the forest and those from a drier region occurred or that toads from a dry region colonized the forest secondarily.

The genus Rhinella corresponds to a group of anurans characterized by numerous taxonomic and systemic challenges, leading to their organization into species complexes. Cytogenetic data for this genus thus far are limited to the diploid number and chromosome morphology, which remain highly conserved among the species. In this study, we analyse the karyotypes of three species of the genus Rhinella (Rhinella granulosa, Rhinella margaritifera, and Rhinella marina) using both classical (conventional staining and C-banding) and molecular (FISH-fluorescence in situ hybridization with 18S rDNA, telomeric sequences, and microsatellite probes) cytogenetic approaches.

While genetic variation in any species is potentially shaped by a range of processes, phylogeography and landscape genetics are largely concerned with inferring how environmental conditions and landscape features impact neutral intraspecific diversity. However, even as both disciplines have come to utilize SNP data over the last decades, analytical approaches have remained for the most part focused on either broad-scale inferences of historical processes (phylogeography) or on more localized inferences about environmental and/or landscape features (landscape genetics). Here we demonstrate that an artificial intelligence model-based analytical framework can consider both deeper historical factors and landscape-level processes in an integrated analysis.

Discordance between different genomic regions, often identified through multilocus sequencing of selected markers, presents particular difficulties in identifying historical processes which drive species diversity and boundaries. Mechanisms causing discordance, such as incomplete lineage sorting or introgression due to interspecific hybridization, are better identified based on population-level genomic datasets. In the toads of the Rhinella granulosa species group, patterns of mito-nuclear discordance and potential hybridization have been reported by several studies.

Amphibians are a widespread Chordata taxon and are important for maintaining the balance of both terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. Brazil has a rich amphibian fauna; however, little is known about the role of their ecology and phylogenetic relationships during the assembly processes of associated endoparasite communities.
