Evaluating the success of a hospital's community engagement process.

This case study outlines how an Ontario hospital initiated an intensive Citizens' Advisory Panel related to budget and service provision decisions. The article describes the community and management context, community engagement process, resulting recommendations, and board response. It article further identifies the process and findings of a concurrent independent evaluation and highlights important takeaways, such as the required time commitment, the need for skilled facilitators, and the value of transparent board decisions.

Artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) are driving innovation in biosciences and are already affecting key elements of medical scholarship and clinical care. This paper develops the methodological concept of river co-learning arenas (RCAs) and explores their potential to strengthen innovative grassroots river initiatives, enliven river commons, regenerate river ecologies, and foster greater socio-ecological justice. The integrity of river systems has been threatened in profound ways over the last century. While academics increasingly point to the value of engaged scholarship, we describe a more extreme form which we label as "deep partnering"-a long-term, holistic, and dynamic collaboration between academics and practitioners to achieve shared goals. Deep partnering involves interdependent and evolving interactions between academics and practitioners over an extended time period. While such relationships enable generative impact on important issues, these relationships remain challenging as academics spend time in the practitioners' complex worlds, surfacing paradoxes due to the partners' conflicting roles, time horizons, and goals, as well as uncertainty in the partnership's evolution.
