This study proposes a method for detecting the heartbeat intervals of a person lying on a bed from ballistocardiographic signals recorded unobtrusively with four dynamic force sensors located under the bed posts. The method does not recognize individual heartbeats, but the intervals where the correlation between two consecutive signal segments maximizes. This study evaluated the performance of the method with nine subjects in 1-h long recordings and achieved 91% beat-to-beat interval (BBI) recognition coverage; 98.6% of the detected BBIs differed less than 50 ms from the values calculated from a reference electrocardiogram signal. This study also evaluated the reliability of two parameters of heart rate variability that have been used in sleep quality assessment in several studies and are usually calculated for 30 s epochs. The results suggest that the method is able to provide sufficient reliability for using the data in evaluation of sleep quality.

Endovascular treatment of postoperative aortic coarctation aneurysms-a single center experience.

Front Cardiovasc Med

December 2024

Department of Cardiology, University Hospital 'St. Ekaterina', Medical University of Sofia, Sofia, Bulgaria.

Background: Formation of local type aortic aneurysm years after surgical repair of coarctation (CoA) occurs in 10% of patients independent of the surgical technique and is a potentially life-threatening condition if left untreated with a high risk of aortic rupture. Redo open surgery is associated with 14% in-hospital mortality and a high risk of complications. Endovascular treatment appears to be a feasible alternative with a high success rate and low morbidity and mortality, but data concerning long-term results is still mandatory.

Background: "Active" heat acclimation (exercise-in-the-heat) can improve exercise performance but the efficacy of "passive" heat acclimation using post-exercise heat exposure is unclear. Therefore, we synthesised a systematic review and meta-analysis to answer whether post-exercise heat exposure improves exercise performance.

Methods: Five databases were searched to identify studies including: (i) healthy adults; (ii) an exercise training intervention with post-exercise heat exposure via sauna or hot water immersion (treatment group); (iii) a non-heat exposure control group completing the same training; and (iv) outcomes measuring exercise performance in the heat (primary outcome), or performance in thermoneutral conditions, V̇Omax, lactate threshold, economy, heart rate, RPE, core temperature, sweat rate, and thermal sensations.

Purpose: This study explores the use of heart rate variability (HRV) analysis, a noninvasive technique for assessing the autonomic nervous system, by applying nonlinear dynamics and chaos theory to detect chaotic behavior in RR intervals and assess cardiovascular health.

Methods: Employing the "System Analysis of Heart Rate Dynamics" (SADR) program, this research combines chaos analysis with the short-time Fourier transform to assess nonlinear dynamic parameters in HRV. It includes constructing phase portraits in Takens space and calculating measures of chaos to identify deterministic chaos indicators.

We developed a deep learning-based extraction of electrocardiographic (ECG) waves from ballistocardiographic (BCG) signals and explored their use in R-R interval (RRI) estimation. Preprocessed BCG and reference ECG signals were inputted into the bidirectional long short-term memory network to train the model to minimize the loss function of the mean squared error between the predicted ECG (pECG) and genuine ECG signals. Using a dataset acquired with polyvinylidene fluoride and ECG sensors in different recumbent positions from 18 participants, we generated pECG signals from preprocessed BCG signals using the learned model and evaluated the RRI estimation performance by comparing the predicted RRI with the reference RRI obtained from the ECG signal using a leave-one-subject-out cross-validation scheme.

Background: The relationship between heart rate variability (HRV) and major depressive disorder (MDD) has been well explored. However, current researches lack an observation of HRV in subthreshold depression (SubD), which increases the risk of MDD and presents significant societal challenges.

Methods: This study compared resting state HRV among 128 MDD patients, 131 SubD individuals and 222 healthy controls (HC) recruited from the hospital, physical examination center, and colleges.
