What is life? Many have asked this question, and no definitive answer is yet widely accepted. Is life something truly distinct from non-living stuff, as many dualists have suggested for millennia? Is there an élan vital that distinguishes living from dead stuff? Or is life about certain types of organization, metabolism, reproduction, goal-oriented behavior? None of these answers have yet won the debate. There is, however, an intriguing new set of ideas that have been developed by Mae-Wan Ho, a biophysicist and science activist (as she calls herself) based in London. Ho's basic assertion is that life exists on a spectrum and is at its root organized, quantum coherent energy. Ho's work attempts to bridge the gap between physics and biology by recognizing that there is no real gap at all-just a gap in current methods and habits of thinking.

Aggregation is a fundamental feature of parasite distribution in the host population, but the biological implications of the aggregation indices used to describe the relationships between the populations of parasites and hosts are not evident. It is speculated that the form of distribution in each case is predicated on the host's varying resistance to the infection, which is hard to control, making it difficult to adequately interpret the index values. This paper examines several cases from trout farms in Russian Karelia to explore the monogenean Gyrodactylus spp.

Discocotyle sagittata (Leuckart, 1842) (Monogenea: Discocotylidae) is redescribed, based on specimens collected from the type host, Salmo trutta Linnaeus, from the type locality, Freiburg, Germany, supplemented with specimens from S. trutta and rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss (Walbaum) reared in an Austrian aquarium. The diagnosis of the genus Discocotyle Diesing, 1850 is emended.

Background: Pituitary pars intermedia dysfunction (PPID) is a prevalent, age-related chronic disorder in equids. Diagnosis of PPID can be challenging because of its broad spectrum of clinical presentations and disparate published diagnostic criteria, and there are limited available treatment options.
Objectives: To develop evidence-based primary care guidelines for the diagnosis and treatment of equine PPID based on the available literature.
